Safety Australia Group has been exclusively engaged to recruit an experienced Senior Level 1 Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for a unique technical assurance project supporting one of Australia's largest transport infrastructure organisations.
This is an exceptional opportunity to apply your specialist laser safety expertise to an innovative project involving vehicle-mounted laser technology used for automated road inspection systems. Working remotely, you will provide independent technical oversight, assurance and formal authorisation of laser safety assessments undertaken by an internal Laser Safety Officer.

About the Role
Reporting as the independent Senior Level 1 Laser Safety Officer, you will provide technical supervision and governance across all laser safety activities associated with the project.
Rather than undertaking the detailed calculations yourself, your role will focus on reviewing, validating and formally authorising the work completed by the client's internal Laser Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards and regulatory requirements. Working with Class 3R & 3B.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical supervision of laser safety assessments.
- Review and validate hazard assessments, exposure calculations and risk analyses.
- Verify Laser Class determinations and Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) assessments.
- Assess eye and skin exposure calculations and beam divergence modelling.
- Evaluate reflected beam risks across varying operational environments.
- Review operational parameters including speed, angle and environmental conditions.
- Provide independent technical assurance for mobile vehicle-mounted laser systems.
- Formally approve or reject proposed laser configurations.
- Authorise recommended engineering, administrative and PPE controls.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Australian Standards and WHS legislation.
- Participate in technical review meetings throughout the project lifecycle.
About You
You are a recognised laser safety specialist with extensive experience applying laser safety principles within complex operational environments.
You will possess:
- Senior Level 1 Laser Safety Officer qualifications.
- Demonstrated experience undertaking and authorising laser safety assessments.
- Extensive knowledge of AS/NZS IEC 60825.1 and AS/NZS IEC 60825.14.
- Strong understanding of laser classification, NHZ analysis and exposure calculations.
- Experience reviewing technical engineering documentation.
- Exceptional technical judgement and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide independent technical assurance and professional sign-off.
Experience working within transport, defence, research, manufacturing or other high-risk technical environments will be highly regarded.
