Job Description
Job description Position Summary The Graphic Pre-press is responsible for preparing, processing and converting customer artwork, images, text and design files into print-ready formats for commercial printing, packaging, labels and other visual media applications. The role ensures all pre-press activities meet customer specifications, production requirements and quality standards before printing commences.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Review customer artwork and design files for printability and technical compliance.
- Prepare, manipulate and format text, graphics and images for printing and digital output.
- Generate layouts, page impositions and print-ready files using specialised pre-press software.
- Perform pre-flight checks to identify and correct file errors before production.
- Ensure artwork complies with customer specifications, dimensions and production requirements.
Image Processing and Colour Management
- Scan, edit, retouch and optimise digital images.
- Perform colour correction, colour separation and colour matching processes.
- Apply colour management systems and profiles to achieve accurate print reproduction.
- Evaluate colour consistency and quality throughout the pre-press process.
Proofing and Quality Control
- Produce digital and hard-copy proofs for customer approval.
- Review proofs against artwork specifications and printing requirements.
- Identify and rectify errors relating to colour, positioning, text, image quality and layout.
- Maintain quality assurance standards and compliance with company procedures.
Plate and Output Preparation
- Operate computer-to-plate (CTP) and other plate-making systems.
- Prepare printing plates, films and digital output devices for production.
- Ensure output files are compatible with printing equipment and workflows.
- Monitor and maintain pre-press production systems and equipment.
Production Support
- Liaise with customers, designers, printers and production staff regarding artwork requirements.
- Provide technical advice on print limitations, artwork preparation and production specifications.
- Assist in troubleshooting pre-press and printing issues.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the printing production workflow.
Key Accountabilities

- Maintenance of colour accuracy and print quality standards.

Typical Skills and Knowledge
- Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
- PDF workflow management.
- Pre-flight and imposition software.
- Colour management systems and ICC profiles.
- Computer-to-Plate (CTP) technology.
- Print production processes including offset, flexographic and digital printing.
- Quality assurance and proofing procedures.
Qualification Level ANZSCO Skill Level 3
- Typically requires:
- AQF Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts (Pre-press) with relevant on-the-job training; or
- AQF Certificate IV qualification; or
- At least three years of relevant industry experience may substitute for formal qualifications in some circumstances.
Salary & Career Outlook
- Salary: Range from $75,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on the specific industry and experience level.
