Who We Are

VCS Foundation, trading as the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC), is a not‑for‑profit organisation with over 50 years of expertise in prevention of cancer and infectious disease through provision of pathology services, and screening and vaccination registries. Our primary purpose is to support Australia and nations across the Indo‑Pacific region to achieve the World Health Organization's global targets for the elimination of cervical cancer.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a full‑time, experienced Grade 1 Multidisciplinary Scientist for the performance of duties within the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory and Specimen Triage at VCS Pathology.

Responsibilities

- Perform the daily operations of all areas of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory and Specimen Triage.
- Assist in the supervision of new staff and qualified placement students working within the areas of the laboratory and Specimen Triage.
- Perform Cytopreparation and Histology techniques.
- Receive, identify and triage all specimens delivered to VCS Pathology by mail or courier.
- Prepare samples including ThinPrep, Histology, swabs and conventional slides for laboratory processing.
- Resolve specimen queries in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team.
- Identify and triage complex specimens in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team (e.g., Compass follow‑up, diagnostic versus routine screening, previous gynaecological cancer etc.).
- Develop, document and review procedures for Cytopreparation and Histology Techniques.
- Develop, document and review procedures for the Specimen Triage area.
- Coordinate storage in compliance with NPAAC requirements.
- Observe safe work practices.
- Monitor stock levels.




- Operate and maintain equipment and complete equipment logs.
- Participate in special projects.
- Participate in internal and external Quality Assurance activities.

What We Are Looking For

- Tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
- Knowledge of OH&S; requirements for medical laboratories.
- Knowledge of safe handling and storage techniques for Biohazardous materials.
- Strong record‑keeping and computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Familiarity with laboratory regulatory provisions and NATA.
- Experience in laboratory procedures and techniques for handling tissues and specimens for histology, including gross examination, embedding, sectioning, H/E staining and special staining including immunohistochemistry.
- Experience in Specimen Reception.
- Excellent organisational and problem‑solving skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and good telephone manner.
- Good time‑management skills to meet deadlines and workloads within a high‑volume workload.
- Previous experience in a pathology laboratory.
