Position Overview

The Plant and Equipment Manager is responsible for the effective management, maintenance, and utilisation of all company-owned and hired plant and equipment. This role ensures that machinery and equipment are safe, reliable, compliant with legislative requirements, and available to meet operational needs across construction, labour hire, mining, civil, and haulage projects. The Manager plays a key role in asset lifecycle management, fleet optimisation, and building strong relationships with internal teams, external suppliers, and clients.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain an up-to-date register of all plant, vehicles, and equipment.
- Oversee allocation and deployment of equipment to projects and sites.
- Ensure equipment is used in accordance with company policies and manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate equipment hire, both internal allocation and external suppliers.
- Oversee the daily operations of the hire fleet, ensuring efficient utilisation and minimal downtime.
- Monitor equipment use through GPS/telemetry systems and hire tracking software.

Maintenance & Compliance

- Schedule and manage routine servicing, inspections, and repairs of equipment.
- Ensure all plant complies with relevant safety, environmental, and regulatory standards (e.g., ISO, Chain of Responsibility, site-specific requirements).
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, pre-start checks, and defect reports.
- Liaise with workshop teams, mechanics, and third-party service providers as required.

Asset Management

- Support the acquisition, disposal, and replacement of plant and equipment in line with operational and budgetary requirements.
- Conduct asset audits and ensure all equipment is tagged, tracked, and registered correctly.
- Monitor equipment performance, downtime, and usage trends to inform asset investment decisions.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

- Work closely with internal project managers, site supervisors, and labour hire teams to understand project equipment needs.
- Liaise with external clients and contractors to coordinate dry or wet hire agreements and equipment support.
- Resolve any client or project issues related to plant performance or availability in a timely and professional manner.

Operational Leadership

- Lead and support a team of yard staff,



drivers, service personnel, and logistics coordinators.
- Develop and implement systems and procedures for efficient hire operations and fleet logistics.
- Ensure site compliance with Chain of Responsibility and fatigue management regulations.

Financial & Operational Management

- Monitor plant hire costs, utilisation rates, and revenue generation.
- Ensure accurate and timely invoicing for hire services, including cross-hire and wet hire billing.
- Implement cost-saving measures without compromising safety or performance.
- Provide regular reports on equipment utilisation, downtime, and costs.
- Assist in the development of plant hire budgets and identify cost-saving or revenue-enhancing opportunities.

Safety & Compliance

- Ensure plant and equipment meets safety standards.
- Support risk assessments, safe operating procedures (SOPs), and operator training.
- Investigate equipment-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Promote sustainability by monitoring fuel, emissions, and resource use.

Quality

- Implement quality policies within their departments.
- Establish and maintain processes that comply with quality requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality.

Health and Safety

- Implement health and safety policies within their departments.
- Ensure that all employees receive appropriate health and safety training.
- Investigate and report on health and safety incidents.

Environment

- Implement environmental policies within their departments.
- Integrate environmental considerations into departmental processes.
- Support initiatives for reducing environmental impact.

- Internal: Operations Manager, Yard Supervisor, Project Managers, Site Supervisors, Procurement, Finance, HR
- External: Clients, Equipment Suppliers, Contractors, Transport & Logistics Providers, Regulators

Leadership and Teamwork





- Lead and support yard and equipment staff.
- Provide training and guidance for protected use of machinery.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- % of equipment available and operational vs. downtime.
- Compliance with scheduled maintenance (target: 100%).
- Reduction in breakdown-related delays.
- Equipment costs tracked against budget.
- Safety incidents related to plant/equipment (zero harm target).

Selection Criteria

Essential:

- Proven experience in plant hire management or a similar role in construction, mining, or civil industries.
- Strong knowledge of earthmoving and construction equipment, including compliance and maintenance requirements.
- Experience managing plant allocation and logistics across multiple projects or sites.
- Demonstrated leadership and team coordination experience.
- High-level organisational and problem-solving skills in fast-paced environments.
- Proficiency with plant management systems, fleet tracking software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Understanding of WHS, Chain of Responsibility, and relevant Australian Standards.
- Proficiency in digital tools (e.g., asset registers, Monday.com, MS Office).

Desirable

- Trade background or mechanical knowledge of plant and machinery.
- Relevant qualifications in Logistics, Asset Management, or Civil Construction.
- Experience with hire management systems
- HRWL (High Risk Work Licence), Forklift, HR or HC license, and/or competency tickets an advantage.
- Experience in ISO-certified systems (9001, 14001, 45001).

Workplace Environment

- Office-based with regular presence in yard, workshop, and job sites.
- Some travel to remote or regional project locations may be required.
- Hands-on role in a dynamic, safety-critical operational environment.
