Industrial Hygiene Specialist

ConocoPhillips Australia is seeking an Industrial Hygiene Specialist to work from either Brisbane or Gladstone. The role reports to the HSE Programs Director and focuses on delivering science‑based health expertise across Australian Business Unit operations.

Job Summary

The specialist will engage with operations, maintenance, engineering, and project stakeholders to provide technical industrial hygiene expertise, address HSE risks, and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and industry best practices. The role supports the industrial hygiene program elements of the ABU Operating Management System and enhances operational integrity and business performance.

Responsibilities

- Deliver high‑quality industrial hygiene services across ABU operations, ensuring compliance with legislation, regulations, and best practices.
- Promote professional growth and operational efficiency by developing HSE team members and site personnel for sampling planning and collection.
- Ensure quality assurance of industrial hygiene and analytical services.
- Coach and mentor health professionals on industrial hygiene principles and act as a subject‑matter expert for other disciplines.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to embed health priorities into operational practices.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, outcomes‑focused Health Plan.
- Champion a learner mindset to foster diversity, inclusion, and psychological safety, encouraging continuous improvement and innovation.
- Build team-oriented relationships, influence stakeholders at all levels, and promote open dialogue to improve working practices.
- Coordinate Health Risk Assessments (HRAs)



for new and modified facilities, Management of Change (MOC) reviews, and projects.
- Participate in incident investigations and reviews to identify effective corrective actions.
- Stay current with regulatory changes related to permissible exposure limits and serve as a contact for legislative advocacy when appropriate.
- Support emergency response activities by liaising with relevant agencies and contractors.
- Act as Safety Officer on the Incident Management Team (IMT) when required.

Qualifications

- Tertiary qualification (bachelor’s degree or higher) in Industrial/Occupational Hygiene or related science discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Biology).
- Minimum 3years of industrial hygiene practice, preferably in oil and gas or a comparable high‑risk industry.
- Thorough knowledge of local and regional workplace health and safety legislation.
- Proven experience implementing worker health protection programs with measurable outcomes.
- Experience advising stakeholders on industrial hygiene requirements aligned with business needs.
- Proficiency in learning new technologies quickly and applying data analytics solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, time‑management, and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organise, and manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities.




- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, fostering positive team culture and collaboration.
- Commitment to safety leadership, operational excellence, and personal accountability.
- Preferred: Master’s degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, public health, engineering, or related HSE field.
- Preferred: Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH) with the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH), or equivalent.
- Preferred: Expert knowledge of HSE and Operations Management Systems, including program development and administration.
- Preferred: 3+ years leading and participating in Tier2 and Tier3 audits, with accountability for audit findings and actions.
- Preferred: 1+ year experience with business intelligence and data visualisation tools such as Power BI.
