About the Organization
Moreton ATSICHS operates a growing network of healthcare clinics for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, providing holistic health and wellbeing services across their lifespan. Our integrated team delivers primary care, allied health, dental, mental health, maternity, early childhood, disability and aged care services as one unit focused on individual client needs.
About the Role
As a Family Support Practitioner working with Birthing in Our Community (BiOC), you will provide social and emotional support, health education, and coordinated care to pregnant women and families up to three years post‑birth.
Responsibilities
- Create a pathway for culturally respectful engagement between women, midwives, and other service providers.
- Support women in developing routines, reinforce healthy parenting strategies, and encourage early learning activities.
- Deliver evidence‑based, culturally safe and responsive health promotion and education to BiOC mothers and families in both individual and group settings. Topics include reducing smoke exposure to infants and children, breastfeeding and optimal infant nutrition,
immunisation information for infants and young children, and safe sleeping practices to prevent sudden infant death syndrome.
- Assist mothers with logistical challenges of attending appointments by ensuring transport needs are met and explaining the purpose and importance of each appointment.
- Create trusting and collaborative working relationships with the allocated midwife throughout the maternity journey.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
- Current Criminal History Check.
- Current C Class Driver’s Licence (QLD).
- Current Working with Children’s Check (Qld Blue Card).
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Robust communication and cultural safety skills, with the ability to build rapport with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
