Sonic Healthcare is creating a new global role – Director, Global Programmes – with a group-wide mandate to provide leadership, direction and assurance for the delivery of our major Digital, Data and Technology programmes. Reporting to the Chief Digital, Data and Information Officer (CDDIO), the Director will shape and steward the group’s global programme portfolio, support the maturation of programme delivery capabilities across the global organisation, and help ensure the successful planning, execution and perks realisation of the strategic initiatives on which our diagnostic services depend.

This is a senior leadership role with a clear mandate. Much will be achieved through influence and trust rather than direct authority: the delivery teams across the group will look to this role for guidance, and the Director will partner closely – with genuine respect for local leadership and domain expertise – with technology, business, clinical and functional leaders in every market in which Sonic operates.

The role represents a unique opportunity to shape and deliver the programmes that will modernise how Sonic works, on a global scale.

Why this role matters

Sonic conducts approximately 129 million patient consultations each year, and the speed, accuracy and accessibility of our diagnostic services increasingly depend on the digital platforms that connect our laboratories, clinicians and patients. Delivering change without disrupting patient care is fundamental to everything we do.

This role is driven by:

Two flagship enterprise programmes – the global roll‑out of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations and the implementation of Workday – now in their early phases

A rare opportunity to shape the design,

governance and delivery approach of these programmes from the outset

The need to deliver complex, cross‑market change to time, cost and quality, with minimal disruption to laboratory and clinical operations

Delivery capabilities that today sit at differing levels of maturity across our federated group

The Director, Global Programmes will be the senior executive accountable for setting direction, enabling assurance and supporting the successful delivery of the group’s key programmes.

Key responsibilities

The Director, Global Programmes will:

Agree, steward and progress the group‑wide programme delivery strategy, standards, methods and governance, and represent the global programme portfolio at executive level

Shape and deliver the group’s two flagship enterprise programmes – Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations and Workday – establishing the governance, delivery approach and teams to take them through to successful global roll‑out

Mature the delivery function by connecting and aligning delivery capabilities across the group into a more coherent global community of practice, building programme management, planning and assurance disciplines to a consistent, group‑wide standard

Guide the establishment and uplift of common delivery capabilities across markets – portfolio and programme management, planning, financial and resource management, risk and dependency management, and benefits tracking

Enable programmes to deliver their intended benefits, governed in line with applicable clinical, data‑protection and healthcare regulatory requirements in every market

Provide executive leadership for programme planning, reporting and assurance, helping ensure risks, issues and dependencies are actively managed and that delivery problems are surfaced early and resolved rapidly

Leadership style and fit

This role requires:

Strong programme and portfolio delivery expertise and the credibility to engage hands‑on

High emotional intelligence and the ability to lead through influence

Respect for professional expertise and decentralised operating models

Genuine executive presence – confidence, humility and pragmatism in equal measure

Background and experience

Proven track record as a senior programme delivery leader (e.g. Programme Director, Head of PMO or Director of Portfolio/Programme Delivery), ideally in complex multinational organisations

15+ years of progressive experience in technology and programme delivery roles, with deep knowledge of large‑scale programme and portfolio management

Direct experience delivering large‑scale enterprise platform implementations – ERP (e.g. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, SAP or Oracle) and/or HCM (e.g. Workday) – ideally on a multi‑country basis

Experience operating in a federated or decentralised organisation is highly regarded

Experience in healthcare or another highly regulated, data‑sensitive industry is welcome but not required

Practicalities

Location: Sydney (relocation required if not already based in Sydney)

Travel: International travel expected
