Position Overview

Pastoral Practitioner at St John of God Murdoch Hospital. Permanent part‑time (22.5–30 hours weekly) with occasional caseload and on‑call duties. Provide spiritual care to patients, families and caregivers within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

- Identify and respond to the spiritual needs of patients, clients and families to promote spiritual maturity, theological reflection and emotional intelligence.
- Use active listening skills to respond compassionately and establish appropriate professional boundaries in accordance with scope of practice.
- Practice intentional personal reflection and participate in team reflective practice.
- Promote and facilitate orientation and induction of new team members.
- Comply with organisational and regulatory requirements for privacy, confidentiality and secure storage of confidential information.
- Apply quality and risk principles to spiritual care practice.
- Advocate for patients and families when priorities or best interests are not recognised.
- Work independently on routine cases of spiritual assessment, care plans and related interventions.
- Lead prayer, worship, reflection, rituals and contribute to review and development of current practice.
- Provide bereavement support in line with hospital/service protocol and best practice.

Qualifications

- Completed or progressing a tertiary level qualification in Pastoral, Theology, Social Work, Counselling, Nursing or a related field.
- Prior experience in pastoral care within a relevant setting, including a SJGHC pastoral internship, supervised pastoral field placement or equivalent professional development courses.




- Demonstrated ability to establish therapeutic pastoral relationships with diverse faith, cultural and social backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with capacity to deliver ritual, liturgy, prayer or reflection respecting others’ cultural and religious beliefs.
- Capability and competence in the use of ritual and liturgical traditions for the spiritual well‑being of patients, families and caregivers.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and on‑call duties as required.

- Competitive salary with salary‑packaging options up to $18,550.
