About the Department

The sterilisation and CSSD staff support the peri‑operative environment across a range of specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and others, and also provide external services to local GP and dental clinics.

About the Role

The casual Instrument Technician is responsible for collection, cleaning, delabelling and decontamination of reusable critical and semi‑critical medical equipment used by the operating suite and clinical units. Key duties include loading and unloading ultrasonic instruments, washers, dryers and sterilisers; packaging instruments as per manufacturer’s instructions and department policies; and preparing and checking loan sets for sterilisation. Additional tasks may be directed by the Perioperative Services Unit Manager.

Duties

- Work within the framework of the National Standards, ACORN and GENCA.
- Ensure risk‑management activities are completed and incidents are recorded, investigated and corrective actions implemented.




- Demonstrate excellent teamwork in a busy environment with changing priorities.
- Provide outstanding customer service and build close working relationships with the CSSD team, operating theatres and other key areas.
- Apply OHS principles, with positive manual handling techniques and basic chemical safety within the sterilising services.
- Create a psychologically safe work environment.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

- Certificate IV in Sterilisation Services for technicians or equivalent from a registered training organisation and 12 months’ experience as an Instrument Technician.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision and willing to undergo orientation and training in all areas of the CSSD.
- High attention to detail, adaptability and commitment to strict hygiene and safety standards.
