Job Overview

Senior Hydrographic Surveyor (CPHS Level 1) – APAC Solutions, Hobart, Tasmania. Provides technical leadership for Ocean Infinity survey projects from planning and mobilisation through to data acquisition, processing, reporting, demobilisation and final client delivery. Acts as Ocean Infinity’s technical representative to the client and is accountable for the overall conduct of assigned survey projects.

Responsibilities

- Lead survey projects as Surveyor in Charge, overseeing acquisition, processing, reporting and final deliverables.
- Design survey plans, develop methodology, and implement QA/QC controls aligned with contract specifications, survey standards and client requirements.
- Coordinate mobilisation, calibration and deployment of survey equipment and software (MBES, GNSS, tide gauges, sound velocity sensors, current meters and related systems).
- Develop and implement horizontal and vertical control solutions, including geodetic control, positioning strategies, tidal reductions and vertical datum approaches.
- Oversee field data acquisition, field processing, data checks and QA/QC systems to ensure completeness, consistency, accuracy and compliance.
- Produce routine and ad hoc technical reports to inform Project Managers, clients and stakeholders on progress, data quality, technical issues, risks and deliverable status.
- Apply survey uncertainty, project error budgets and data quality standards to assess results, support technical decision‑making and communicate achieved survey order and confidence in final deliverables.
- Validate deliverables and oversee production of preliminary and final client outputs, including surfaces, charts, reports and other technical deliverables.
- Lead safe field operations by promoting proactive risk management, supporting toolbox talks and hazard discussions, maintaining compliance with the Safety Management System and exercising stop‑work authority when required.




- Co‑ordinate coaching and development of future Hydrographic Surveyors, sharing technical knowledge, embedding lessons learned and driving continuous improvement across survey workflows.

Qualifications

- Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor Level 1 or an experienced surveyor on a clear pathway to CPHS Level 1 (FIG Cat A preferred).
- Proof of experience leading complex survey projects from planning to final client acceptance.
- Strong technical understanding of hydrographic survey methods, geodetic control, tidal and vertical datum solutions, MBES acquisition, field processing, QA/QC and client deliverable requirements.
- Clear communicator able to brief project teams, vessel personnel, clients and stakeholders on technical requirements, data quality, risks and delivery status.
- Safety‑focused leader who supports the Safety Management System, promotes secure work practices and can stop or suspend unsafe operations.
- Organised and decisive, able to manage competing project demands, maintain technical assurance and support timely delivery in dynamic field environments.
- Committed to developing others through supervision, mentoring, competency development and continuous improvement of planning, acquisition, processing, reporting and data quality practices.
- Desirable: Experience with seabed, feature and data interpretation to support client acceptance, charting decisions and final deliverable quality.
- Marine or offshore safety training such as BOSIET, sea survival, first aid, HUET or equivalent certifications.
- Experience operating autonomous survey vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles in hydrographic data collection.
