Head of Operational Risk

An established and growing non-bank lender is seeking an experienced Head of Operational Risk to lead the development and ongoing enhancement of its operational risk framework. This is a senior leadership role offering the opportunity to influence risk strategy, governance, and resilience across a dynamic financial services business.
Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer (or equivalent), you will work closely with executive leadership and business stakeholders to strengthen the organisation's risk culture, improve operational resilience, and ensure risk management practices remain aligned with business objectives and regulatory expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and maintain the enterprise operational risk management framework.
- Develop and oversee the operational risk strategy, policies, standards, and reporting.
- Embed a strong risk culture across the organisation through education, coaching, and governance.
- Facilitate and oversee Risk & Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs) across business units.
- Maintain the operational risk register and monitor key operational risks.
- Develop and report on Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), risk appetite metrics, and operational risk trends.
- Oversee incident management, root cause analysis, issue remediation, and lessons learned.
- Coordinate business continuity management (BCM) and operational resilience planning.
- Support third-party and outsourcing risk management activities.
- Provide independent challenge on new products, projects, system implementations, and change initiatives.
- Prepare high-quality reporting for Executive, Board, and Board Risk Committee meetings.
- Build strong relationships with Compliance, Credit Risk, Technology, Cyber Security, Internal Audit, and business leaders.
Skills & Experience
- Significant experience in operational risk management within financial services, preferably lending, banking, fintech, or consumer finance.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing operational risk frameworks.
- Strong understanding of the Three Lines Model and contemporary risk governance practices.
- Experience engaging with executive leadership, Board committees, and regulators.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong leadership capability with experience mentoring and developing teams.
Regulatory & Risk Knowledge Solid working knowledge of Australian financial services regulation, including:
- National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 (NCCP Act)
- National Credit Code
- Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) regulatory framework
- Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act)
- Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs)
- Design and Distribution Obligations (DDO)
- Breach reporting obligations
- AFCA requirements and dispute resolution obligations
