Burndy is seeking a talented and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team based in Mt Druitt. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and justification of our cable support systems to relevant Australian and international standards for structural, fire and seismic loads. The candidate will be involved with major projects on a national scale and assist the department in developing detailed CAD designs, developing new products, producing technical data sheets and supporting our sales team on project enquiries. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the next generation of cable support design for infrastructure, commercial and utility megaprojects throughout Australia.
About Burndy
Burndy Cable Supports, a subsidiary of Phoenix Steel Sales Pty Ltd is a leading supplier of steel cable supports in the electrical building services industry. We pride ourselves in our local design and manufacturing capabilities of high-performance electrical support systems. We are partners to Australia’s largest electrical contractors, supplying key projects including tunnels, data centres, high rise commercial and major utility projects nationwide. With decades of engineering heritage, Burndy products are trusted by our customers to deliver reliable, code-compliant products in the most demanding environments. Our engineering teams drive continuous innovation — developing solutions that meet the evolving needs of modern electrical commercial and infrastructure megaprojects.
Key Responsibilities
Structural & Fire Load Design
• Perform structural analysis of steel support systems for electrical cables to relevant codes and standards (e.g. AS1170, AS4100, NEMA VE1).
• Design systems to sustain fire load requirements of WS5X classification to AS3013 using our library of fire tested solutions.
• Conduct load calculations, stress analysis, and tolerance studies to validate design integrity.
• Collaborate with testing laboratories to develop and improve Burndy’s current technical capacities for static and fire performance requirements.
CAD Design & Documentation
• Produce detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models using industry-standard software (Solidworks and Revit experience highly regarded).
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date engineering documentation including BOMs, specifications, and revision histories in accordance with Burndy's change management processes.
• Ensure designs meet manufacturability, quality, and cost targets through close collaboration with manufacturing and supply chain teams.
• Support design reviews and provide technical drawings for project specific requirements.
Sales Technical Support
• Act as a technical resource for the sales team, providing engineering expertise and product recommendations on major and complex projects.
• Prepare technical submissions, product selection guides, and project-specific documentation for clients and specifiers.
• Attend client meetings, site visits, and industry events as required to support pre-sales engineering activities.
• Respond to technical enquiries from internal teams and external customers in a timely and professional manner.
Research & Development
• Contribute to the development of new products from concept through to commercialisation, including ideation, feasibility, prototyping, and testing phases.
• Investigate emerging materials, manufacturing methods, and industry trends to inform product innovation.
• Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, sales and marketing teams to define product requirements and technical roadmaps.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-engineering audiences.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• 3–7 years of professional mechanical design or structural engineering experience, ideally in the building services (MEP) industries.
• Demonstrated proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and 2D drafting.
• Sound working knowledge of structural analysis principles and experience applying relevant load standards.
• Exposure to fire load design requirements highly regarded.
Skills & Competencies
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with keen attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deliver to deadlines in a energetic environment.
• Collaborative team player who can also work autonomously with minimal supervision.
• Customer-focused mindset with a proactive approach to technical problem solving.
