About the team

The Sterile Processing Services (SPS) department provides comprehensive decontamination, sterilisation and reprocessing services for reusable medical and surgical equipment used throughout the hospital and by external customers.

Working closely with nursing, medical and perioperative teams, our staff play an essential role in ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care across the hospital.

About the role

As an Instrument Technician, you will collaborate with managers, clinical teams and colleagues to support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. Working within the Sterile Processing Services department, you will join a supportive, collaborative and team-focused environment where learning and professional development are encouraged.

A typical shift may include:

- Ensuring strict adherence to sterilisation practices and infection prevention standards.
- Cleaning, washing, packing, wrapping and sterilising instruments, equipment and consumables used across operating theatres, Day Procedure Centre, wards and outpatient clinics.
- Monitoring sterilisation processes and maintaining accurate documentation to ensure equipment is safe, compliant and ready for clinical use.




- Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of patient care.

Grade information:

Grade 1 – Entry Level

This role is ideal for nursing students, dental nurses, health science students, recent school leavers or anyone seeking to begin a career in healthcare.

No previous experience or formal qualifications are required. Full training will be provided, and successful applicants will be supported to undertake further training, including a Certificate III in Sterilisation Services.

Grade 2 – Qualified Instrument Technician

Suitable for candidates who have:

- Completed a Certificate III in Sterilisation Services.
- A minimum of 12 months' practical workplace experience as an Instrument Technician.
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instrumentation and instrument set assembly.
- Experience working within sterile processing, theatre services or a comparable healthcare environment.

Please note that student placement experience alone will not be considered sufficient.

Grade 3 – Experienced Instrument Technician

Suitable for candidates who have:

- A Certificate III in Sterilisation Services (or an equivalent qualification recognised by the employer).
- Four or more years' experience as an Instrument Technician.
- Advanced knowledge of instrumentation, tray assembly and sterile processing workflows.
- The ability to support, mentor and guide junior technicians.

Grade 3 technicians undertake more complex duties and are expected to work competently across all areas of the department while contributing to a collaborative and supportive team culture.
