Location: Heidelberg West, VIC (Ultralift Australia HQ)

About Ultralift Australia
Ultralift is an Australian company, operating since 1999, that designs and manufactures motorised lift devices and mounting solutions for audiovisual (AV) equipment. Our product range includes TV lifts, projector lifts, outdoor TV enclosures, ceiling, wall and floor lifts and mounts, anti-ligature enclosures, and custom AV mounting solutions. All design, manufacture and assembly happen in our Melbourne facility. We service the residential, commercial, education and government sectors.
Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Product Design Engineer with strong SolidWorks skills to join our Design and Engineering team.
This is not a graduate or entry-level position. You will own design work end to end: developing parts, assemblies and drawings, specifying components, and releasing manufacturing documentation that the factory can build from without coming back to you. You will work directly with our production and assembly teams on the floor, so designs are manufacturable, reliable and durable in the field.
You will be trusted with both standard product development and custom project work, from concept through to production, with the autonomy that comes with real experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate and maintain SolidWorks parts, assemblies, drawings and component specifications for AV lift, mount and enclosure products.
- Produce accurate, complete manufacturing documentation including drawings, BOMs and assembly instructions.
- Work closely with the manufacturing and assembly teams to ensure designs are cost-effective, robust, assembly-friendly, and compliant with relevant mechanical, structural and safety standards.
- Manage design revisions, maintain version control, document changes and ensure traceability by following the Ultralift design process within SolidWorks PDM.
- Lead custom project work: interpret specifications and plans from clients, architects and AV specifiers, develop design concepts, and drive them through design iteration to release.
- Ensure designs meet quality, durability and performance expectations for the application, including indoor, outdoor, weather-protected, aesthetic privacy and concealment requirements.
- Contribute to product improvement, cost-down and design standardisation across the existing range.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum 3 years' experience using SolidWorks for mechanical product design, including parts modelling, assemblies, drawings and BOMs.
- Demonstrated experience taking a product from concept to production in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong working knowledge of design-for-manufacturing principles:
machine and process constraints, material properties, sheet metal, surface finishes, mechanical tolerancing and strength calculations.
- Proficient in reading and producing 2D drawings, and converting designs into manufacturable components. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing experience preferred.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM or a comparable version control system preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work across production, assembly and directly with clients.
- Sound project and time management: able to run multiple design tasks, revisions, and custom and standard product work in parallel.
What We Offer
- A small, capable team where your design decisions are built and shipped within weeks, not filed away.
- Direct access to a full manufacturing facility, prototyping and the people who assemble your designs.
- Genuine ownership of products and projects, with the autonomy to make calls.
- Market-competitive salary, discussed openly at interview.
Caveat: If you have a strong portfolio of relevant SolidWorks, mechanical, or AV lifting and mounting design work, or proven hands-on experience (even if your formal qualifications or years of experience sit below the minimum), we will take that into account.
How to Apply
Please send your résumé along with a portfolio or examples of prior work. Include any past designs of lifting, mounting, enclosure or AV type mechanisms, or anything else demonstrating your skills in product design, assemblies and manufacturability.
