Data Engineer (BI / AI)

Milestone IT is partnering with an established organisation to recruit a Senior Data & BI Engineer to join a growing analytics practice. The organisation delivers executive-grade BI and reporting solutions to enterprise clients and is now expanding its capabilities with AI. This is an opportunity to join a small, senior team with a high degree of autonomy and close collaboration with leadership.

The Role

Join an established practice and help take it further — extending BI and data delivery with AI. We are seeking a strong Data/BI Engineer with the aptitude and appetite to immerse themselves in AI and in clients' operational environments — not a packaged AI specialist. You will work closely with senior leadership and technical stakeholders. This is an initial 3-month contract, with intent to extend and convert to a permanent role.

What You'll Do

- Build and maintain data pipelines from diverse, often messy source systems (ERP, finance systems, APIs, file feeds and other operational platforms).
- Design and build the data models and warehouse layer that underpin reporting.
- Build dashboards and reporting that turn operational data into executive-grade intelligence.
- Help build and grow the AI/ML layer — predictive insight, anomaly detection, natural-language querying and automated briefings — learning and applying it alongside the team,



with the validation required to make outputs trustworthy.
- Own data quality and the correctness of what is delivered to clients.
- Grow the library of reusable data models, patterns and templates.
- Use AI tooling to multiply your own output.

Required Skills

- 7–10 years' hands-on data/BI delivery experience.
- Cloud data engineering experience — Microsoft Azure (Azure SQL / Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory) preferred; equivalent AWS, GCP, Snowflake or Databricks experience welcome where transferable, with willingness to work in Azure.
- Enterprise BI experience to a senior standard — Power BI preferred; strong Tableau, Qlik or Looker experience transferable. Semantic modelling, measures (DAX or equivalent), row-level security.
- ETL/data-pipeline tools — ADF, SSIS or similar.
- Python for data and AI integration.
- Some exposure to generative AI / LLM tools (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) and a strong appetite to develop deep capability — we don't expect a ready-made AI expert.
- Strong data-modelling judgment; integration via REST and SOAP APIs and file feeds.
- Pragmatic and delivery-focused; comfortable owning correctness on imperfect real-world data.

Desirable

- A track record of self-directed learning into a new technology or domain.
- Domain exposure across operational, logistics, transport, manufacturing or resources environments.
- Data governance/security awareness (identity, data classification, row-level security, data residency).
- Small consultancy or startup experience.
