About the role
The Project Engineer is responsible for applying their technical expertise and experience, under the guidance of the Technical Manager, to support the successful delivery of Project requirements across Leonardo customers, primarily the Royal Australian Navy.
This role involves contributing across all phases of the project lifecycle, including design, integration, testing, and ongoing support activities. The Project Engineer will play a key role in ensuring systems are delivered and maintained to the highest standards.
The position requires a strong commitment to quality, professionalism, and timely delivery, alongside a proactive approach to workplace health and safety. All work is expected to align with the Leonardo Australia Competency Expectations, maintaining a high standard of performance and conduct at all times.
The Project Engineer will have the following responsibilities:
- Capture stakeholder and system requirements.
- Show traceability and establish verification methods of systems engineering requirements.
- Adherence to Leonardo's Engineering governance e.g. policy, framework processes, design reviews.
- Provide systems engineering support to investigation and definition of Communication system architectures for inclusion in Survey & Quote tasking.
- Initial Technical Point of Contact for local engineering queries.
- Investigation of problem reports and provision of recommendations in Engineering Change Control.
- Development of Change Proposals to support baseline changes from the Engineering Change Control.
- Provide systems engineering support to studies in a wide variety of communication technologies.
- Support the system integration, test and trials team to ensure timely customer acceptance.
- Investigate the cause of anomalies observed during integration or evaluation activities, using real trials data.
- Contribute to the Preliminary and Critical Design phase of Survey & Quote taskings.
- Support verification activities in the SI&TF; or on the platforms.
- Continual reporting on project status as required.
- Building rapport with customers and key stakeholders amid schedule pressures.
- Develop the required skills to support the maintenance of the cable management database.
Education and Certification Requirements:
Essential:
- Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent 4-year qualification in one of the below disciplines, (or equivalent overseas recognised program).
- Electrical
- Electronic/Communications
- Telecommunications
- Systems Engineering
- Mechatronics
- Computer/Software Engineering considered where direct relevant experience in communications systems integration and test is demonstrated.
- A 3-year Engineering Technologist-level qualification may be acceptable in lieu of the 4-year Bachelor of Engineering based on a case-by-case assessment.
- Must be eligible to apply and maintain Australian Defence Security Clearance (min NV1).
- Must be eligible under ITAR regulation to be able to access and manage ITAR controlled items.
Desirable:
- Additional formal qualifications, certifications and/or endorsements.
- Hold a National Construction Industry White Card or possess the ability to obtain.
Qualified and Technical Experience Requirements:
Essential:
- Experience of the Systems Engineering lifecycle, from development and management of requirements through to and including acceptance testing.
- Experience in breaking down user requirements into detailed requirement specifications.
- Experience in system integration and test activities.
- Demonstrated experience in electronic systems across their sustainment lifecycle.
- Collaborative behaviours, excellent inter-personal skills and good working relationships with key stakeholders, clients and subcontractors.
- Excellent report writing and verbal communications skills.
- Working level knowledge, understanding and experience of safety and environmental compliance.
- Display a willingness to challenge the normal and a willingness to learn and improve.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
- Experience within in Naval engineering programmes for more than 2 years is desired in this role, ideally with experience in Australian Naval communication programmes.
- Knowledge or related experience in a maritime production, maintenance or engineering environment.
- Specific defence experience with project deliverables to the RAN and RNZN will be highly regarded.
- Proven international stakeholder management experience i.e. worked in/with global businesses.
- Flexibility to travel & work across international time zones as required.
- Knowledge of ITAR requirements for the handling, storage and transport of ITAR controlled parts.
- Experience in Security architecture.
- Experience in System networking.
- Experience with using MCAD Tools.
- Experience with using Microsoft suite of applications including Access
