The office of ​Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher is seeking applications for an ongoing, full-time parliamentary adviser to join the minister’s finance policy team based at Australian Parliament House in Canberra, ACT. The position would work closely with the broader policy team to support the budget process and oversee the minister’s financial reporting obligations.

This position would suit candidates who enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative and dynamic environment and who want to contribute to delivering on the Albanese Labor Government’s agenda.

Position Overview

The adviser will provide high quality advice and support to the Minister relating to finance policy, budget process, public administration and political matters, particularly in relation to the Minister’s finance portfolio.

The key duties of the position include but are not limited to:

- Work in a quick paced and dynamic environment, providing well-considered, strategic advice to the Minister for Finance and supporting delivery of priority, complex and sensitive policy, public administration and political issues, particularly in relation to the Federal Budget process and fiscal reporting.

- Maintain effective relationships across government, including with other minister’s offices and the Australian Public Service to deliver on complex and sensitive policy priorities.

- Liaise with the Australian Public Service in relation to the preparation of policy, advice and legislation, and ensure that the resources of the portfolio department are effectively utilised to provide high level and appropriate advice and support to the Minister.

- Liaise closely with stakeholders to provide advice and support the Government’s priorities.

- Provide advice and support on parliamentary matters including Question Time, legislative processes and parliamentary business.

- Assist in developing policy initiatives,



including through analysing and preparing reports, papers, policy statements, briefing notes and statistical information on policy and related matters and significant portfolio initiatives.

- Provide input into communications and political advice as required.

- Promote, support and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.

- Interstate travel will be required for this role as directed, with occasional irregular work hours, particularly during parliamentary sitting weeks and around budget preparation.

- Other duties as required to support the Parliamentarian and the effective operation of the Office.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

- Demonstrated policy experience in the areas of finance, fiscal management and/or budget programming in a public, non-profit or private sector organisation. Experience in budget management and fiscal reporting, working politically, and working in public administration would be highly regarded.

- Strong understanding of government processes, including translating policy into practice. An understanding of the Australian Public Service/federal budget processes would be highly regarded.

- Excellent relationship management skills and proven ability to collaborate and work across stakeholders and portfolios to achieve outcomes, particularly through working with other Ministerial Offices, the Australian Public Service and community stakeholders.

- Demonstrated ability to think and work strategically as a part of a small team and deliver quality work in a high-pressure environment.





- Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

- A respectful demeanour when engaging with colleagues and constituents.

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:

- A commencing salary between $113,521 and $167,530 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.

- An additional optional allowance of $35,387 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements.

- Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).

- An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

- An initial probationary period of three months may apply.

- The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.

- Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.

- The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.

- For staff employed by a Minister or Parliamentary Secretary either in a personal or electorate staff position, it is a condition of your employment that you obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
