Urban Camp is a well-established not-for-profit organisation that has been creating memorable educational experiences for young people for more than 40 years.
Located in Melbourne's Royal Park, Urban Camp provides affordable accommodation and immersive urban learning experiences for schools, community groups and other organisations, enabling thousands of young people each year to explore Melbourne, build confidence and create lasting memories.
As Urban Camp embarks on an exciting period of strategic growth, including a significant expansion of its accommodation facilities and services, we are seeking an experienced Non-Executive Director to join our Board.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to an organisation with a strong social purpose while helping guide its future growth and long-term sustainability.
About the role
As a Non-Executive Director, you will work collaboratively with fellow Directors and the Chief Executive Officer to provide strategic leadership, oversee organisational performance, ensure effective governance and support Urban Camp's continued growth and long-term sustainability.
You will contribute to Board discussions, provide strategic oversight and constructive challenge, monitor organisational performance, assist in shaping strategic direction and help ensure Urban Camp continues to deliver meaningful outcomes while remaining financially sustainable and well positioned for future opportunities.
Who we're looking for
To complement the skills and experience of our existing Board,
we are particularly interested in candidates with senior executive or leadership experience in one or more of the following areas:
Accommodation management, hotels, serviced apartments or the broader accommodation sector
Hospitality, tourism or visitor economy businesses
Commercial leadership, business growth and organisational transformation
Capital projects, property development or major infrastructure
Strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement
Financial sustainability, commercial strategy or enterprise growth
Community and Stakeholder Engagement - networks across schools, government or community sectors
You will also bring:
Strong strategic thinking and commercial judgement.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Strong track record in safety, compliance and risk management
A collaborative leadership style and commitment to good governance.
The ability to work constructively with fellow Directors, the Chief Executive Officer and a broad range of stakeholders.
A genuine interest in supporting an organisation that creates positive outcomes for young people and the wider community.
Whether you are an experienced Non-Executive Director or a senior executive seeking your first board appointment, we welcome applications from individuals who can bring strategic thinking, commercial insight and a commitment to good governance.
Previous board experience is highly regarded.
Completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Course or equivalent governance training is also highly regarded.
Time commitment
Directors are expected to actively participate in the governance of Urban Camp, including:
Approximately five Board meetings each year.
Participation on a Board Committee and/or Working Group (approx. 4 meetings each year).
Attendance at an annual strategic planning day.
Preparation for Board and Committee meetings, including review of Board papers.
Ongoing participation in Board correspondence and out-of-session decisions.
Attendance at the Annual General Meeting and occasional representation of Urban Camp at events and stakeholder meetings.
This voluntary role requires an average commitment of approximately4–6 hours per month.
