About the Role
23 Digital is seeking an experienced Shopify Technical Lead to lead the technical strategy, architecture and delivery of Shopify and Shopify Plus solutions across a diverse portfolio of Australian clients.
This role will lead technical discovery, solution architecture, complex integrations and engineering governance throughout the project lifecycle.
Working closely with clients, project managers, designers, developers and external technology partners, you will ensure every Shopify implementation is maintainable, future-ready and aligned with platform best practices.
This is a hands‐on leadership role suited to someone who can confidently move between enterprise solution design, technical decision‐making, client consultation and development team leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Shopify Solution Architecture
Lead the end‐to‐end technical architecture of Shopify and Shopify Plus implementations.
Translate business and functional requirements into scalable, secure and high‐performing technical solutions.
Define architecture, integration strategies and implementation approaches for complex B2C, B2B, Shopify POS and multi‐market commerce projects.
Facilitate technical discovery workshops and solution design sessions with clients and internal stakeholders.
Prepare technical specifications, architecture diagrams, integration documentation and implementation plans.
Support project estimation, technical scoping and pre‐sales solution development.
Shopify Plus Platform Expertise
Design solutions using Shopify Plus capabilities, including Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Flow, Shopify Markets, B2B, Customer Accounts and Shopify POS.




Recommend the most appropriate approach across native Shopify functionality, third‐party applications, custom applications, theme development and headless commerce.
Evaluate technical trade‐offs and advise clients on the most practical and commercially appropriate solution.
Develop reusable architecture patterns, development standards, accelerators and implementation frameworks.
Integration and Data Architecture
Architect integrations between Shopify and enterprise systems such as ERP, CRM, PIM, OMS, WMS, payment gateways, shipping providers, marketplaces and marketing platforms.
Define integration patterns, API requirements, authentication methods, data flows and event‐driven architecture.
Oversee integrations using the Shopify Admin API, Storefront API, GraphQL, REST APIs and webhooks.
Ensure integrations are secure, scalable, fault‐tolerant and appropriately monitored.
Lead data migration planning across products, customers, orders, inventory, content and historical records.
Define data mapping, transformation, validation, reconciliation, testing and deployment processes.
Identify integration and migration risks early and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
Technical Leadership
Provide technical direction and architectural guidance to Shopify developers throughout delivery.
Mentor developers through technical coaching, solution reviews, pair programming and knowledge‐sharing sessions.
Support developers in resolving complex technical challenges and platform limitations.
Promote engineering excellence, accountability and continuous improvement across the development team.
Contribute to recruitment, technical assessments and capability development for Shopify roles.
Monitor Shopify platform developments and recommend new capabilities that deliver measurable business value.
Help strengthen the organisation's Shopify service offering, delivery processes and technical maturity.




Client and Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the primary technical advisor for Shopify clients.
Communicate architecture decisions, implementation approaches, risks, dependencies and trade‐offs to technical and non‐technical stakeholders.
Build trusted relationships with client technology teams, business leaders and external partners.
Collaborate with project managers, business analysts, UX/UI designers, QA specialists and developers to deliver projects on time and within scope.
Present technical recommendations clearly and connect technology decisions to business outcomes.
Support client workshops, project kick‐offs, technical demonstrations and solution presentations.
Desirable Experience
Shopify certifications or recognised Shopify training.
Experience delivering Shopify POS and omnichannel retail solutions.
Experience with headless commerce using Hydrogen and Oxygen.
Experience working within a digital agency or consulting workplace.
Familiarity with Agile and Scrum delivery methodologies.
Experience supporting technical pre‐sales, proposals and solution estimations.
