Engineering Manager - Major Retail Technology
About the Opportunity
Our client is a global leader in retail commerce software, powering point-of-sale, mobile, self-service and back-of-store operations for many of the world's largest retailers. Tens of thousands of stores rely on their platform every day. They are hiring Engineering Managers to lead teams building the next generation of AI-native development tooling, an agentic platform layer, and a high-accountability operating model where engineering owns delivery end-to-end. Scope ranges from first-line manager through senior manager depending on your experience, team size and product complexity. Strong tech leads moving into management and seasoned managers are both encouraged to apply.
What You'll Own
Delivery and execution - milestone plans, sprint tracking, technical risk and quality. You are accountable.
The team - hiring, performance, compensation, career development and the hard conversations.
Technical fluency - stay close enough to the code to contribute in design reviews, debug production issues and challenge trade-offs.
Product reality - deep knowledge of architecture, backlog, customers and market performance.
Production support - own customer escalations within your scope and meet SLAs.What We're Looking For
Strong software engineering background with a proven track record of shipping production systems at scale.




Demonstrated leadership of software engineers (as manager, tech lead or senior IC owning end-to-end delivery), including hiring, development, performance management and exits.
Working knowledge of modern Agile, SDLC and CI/CD in continuous-deployment environments.
Ability to move fluidly between architecture and the debugger, and between executive reviews and stand-ups.
Track record of leading through ambiguity, owning missed commitments and recovering from incidents.
Excellent written and verbal communication; direct, low-ego and honest.Bonus Experience
AI-assisted development workflows (coding agents, AI test generation, RAG tooling or agentic CI/CD).
Retail, POS or other transaction-critical systems.
Java/Spring Boot, Node.js/TypeScript, Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI/CD, MongoDB or similar modern stacks.
Leading distributed or multi-site teams.
How They Work
Engineering owns delivery. Horizontal teams (TPMs, Quality, DevOps, Principal Engineers) support and unblock - they do not own outcomes. Significant investment in AI tooling reduces coordination overhead while preserving accountability. You drive the plan, call the risks and ship the product.
