Applied is seeking a Head of Mechanical Design to join our team and lead the delivery of complex, advanced automation projects from concept through to commissioning. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Head of Mechanical Design to lead our Mechanical Engineering team and help lead the deployment of advanced, future‐proof solutions to Australian Industry.

About the Role
As the Head of Mechanical Design, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to a talented team of Mechanical Engineers and Designers. You will be responsible for driving engineering excellence, mentoring future leaders, overseeing project delivery, and ensuring the department remains at the forefront of innovation and emerging technologies.
Working closely with Operations, Projects, Solutions, Controls, Production, and senior leadership, you will play a key role in delivering complex automation projects that create lasting value for our customers.
What You'll Be Responsible For:
Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute the Mechanical Design department's strategic roadmap.
Align team objectives, resources, and priorities with broader business goals.
Identify and implement emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies that improve efficiency, quality, and profitability.
Monitor industry trends and drive innovation across the department.
Mentor, coach, and develop a high‐performing engineering team.
Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
Support succession planning and develop future leaders within the business.
Partner with People & Culture to recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent.
Project Delivery & Resource Management
Allocate resources effectively across multiple projects and priorities.
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Monitor team utilisation, workload balancing, and departmental performance.
Maintain accurate project forecasting and planning.
Cross‐Functional Collaboration
Act as the key link between Mechanical Design and other departments, customers, and stakeholders.
Collaborate closely with the Solutions team during concept development, budgeting, and project planning.
Support project teams in resolving technical challenges and mitigating risks.
Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across engineering systems and workflows.
Ensure effective utilisation of business systems including Procore, Employment Hero, and project management tools.
Strengthen engineering governance, documentation standards, and design review processes.
Champion innovation throughout the design process.
Encourage experimentation and adoption of new engineering technologies.
Ensure the team remains at the forefront of advancements in robotics, automation, and mechanical engineering.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, regulations, and safety requirements.
Implement proactive risk management practices throughout project lifecycles.
Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, and accountability.

About You

You will bring:
Extensive experience in mechanical engineering, automation, process or industrial systems.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams.
Strong understanding of project delivery, budgeting, and resource planning.
Experience working in complex manufacturing, automation, robotics, or industrial environments.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
A continuous improvement mindset and passion for innovation.
Strong commercial awareness and problem‐solving capability.
