About The Role
As Senior Media Officer, you will play a key role in shaping how Townsville City Council communicates with the community. Working closely with the Media Team Manager, senior leaders, the Mayor and Councillors, you will provide strategic media advice, manage media enquiries, and help protect and enhance Council's reputation through accurate, timely and engaging communications.
This is a fast-paced and influential role where you will identify emerging issues, develop proactive media opportunities, coordinate media conferences, and support crisis and disaster communications. You will work across a broad range of channels including print, radio, television, digital and social media to ensure the community remains informed about Council's services, programs and major initiatives.
Working as part of the Communications and Customer Experience team, you will contribute to integrated communication campaigns, create compelling content, and help deliver consistent messaging that strengthens community understanding, trust and engagement with Council.
About You
A degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs or a related field, with significant experience in media, communications or a similar environment.
Exceptional written communication skills, with experience producing media releases, feature articles and other high-quality content.
Strong verbal communication and stakeholder engagement skills,
with the ability to build effective relationships across a wide range of audiences.
Experience managing media enquiries and identifying opportunities to generate positive media coverage.
An understanding of the media landscape, including newsroom operations, media requirements and best-practice media engagement.
Demonstrated success building and maintaining professional relationships across the media industry.
Strong knowledge of social media and digital communication channels as part of an integrated communications strategy.
The ability to provide sound advice in a fast-paced environment, including during high-profile, sensitive or emerging issues.
An understanding of local government or the ability to quickly develop knowledge of Council operations and services.

Photography, videography or multimedia editing skills will be highly regarded.
