Our client, a Federal Government Agency, is seeking a Principal Java Software Engineer to join their team in Canberra. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and support of a life-critical application used by the Agency

As a Principal Java Software Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting, maintaining, and enhancing the cloud and back-end Java/AWS/Oracle components of the system. You will collaborate closely with a small but highly skilled team of Java and .NET developers, leveraging your extensive experience to deliver enterprise-grade software solutions that enable operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include:

- Developing enterprise-level software using Java, Oracle, AWS technologies, and Java EE components.
- Maintaining and enhancing web-based user interfaces using ReactJS, CSS, and HTML.
- Designing and implementing data models within Oracle Database, utilizing Java ORM frameworks such as Hibernate.
- Creating and managing RESTful and SOAP web services, including OpenAPI specifications and XML schemas.
- Building and supporting DevOps workflows with Jenkins, Git, Maven, and Ant.
- Producing comprehensive design documentation and technical specifications.
- Providing expert advice and support to senior IT leadership and ensuring system reliability through scheduled on-call rotations.

Essential skills and experience:





- At least 8 years of Java development experience with a strong grasp of enterprise design patterns, JPA, Hibernate ORM, Java EE, and reactive programming.
- Proficiency in web service development (SOAP and REST APIs), XML/JSON, and Spring/SpringBoot frameworks.
- Experience with Unix/Linux environments and scripting (Bash).
- Robust database skills, including data modelling and stored procedures, preferably with Oracle.
- Hands-on experience with AWS components such as EC2, Lambdas, API Gateway, S3, SQS, and CloudFormation.
- Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for critical system support.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This position offers a hybrid working arrangement, with the ability to work both onsite and remotely.

Candidates must be able to obtain Baseline security clearance before commencement.
