About the role

An exciting opportunity exists to lead a high-profile team providing legal advice and in-house counsel on a broad spectrum of corporate and commercial issues in a fast-paced workplace – a senior legal opportunity. The Office of the General Counsel provides legal and policy advice to the Premier and Ministers supported by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) and related agencies.

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Legal Team, the Manager will:

- Manage and lead a high performing team in DPC's Office of the General Counsel,
- Deliver sensitive and complex legal advice on corporate and commercial law matters.
- You must be admitted to practice as an Australian lawyer and hold a Victorian practising certificate.

Key Accountabilities

- Leading and managing a team of lawyers providing legal advice and in-house counsel to senior Departmental staff and DPC Ministers, with limited supervision, including management of workload allocation, supervision of the team and staff development.
- Leading and assisting with the preparation of advice,



briefs and other documentation on significant legal issues for the Premier and other DPC Ministers in corporate law in a variety of forums.
- Initiating, managing and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders, including by:
- Providing influential, practical advice (particularly where stakeholders hold competing priorities and views);
- Advocating for DPC’s or the State’s position as needed to ensure that a consistent, whole of Victorian Government approach is adopted for issues led by the team;
- Negotiating to resolve differences to achieve agreement to DPC’s or the State’s projects or programs.

- Assisting the executive team of the Office of the General Counsel with organisational improvement, capacity and capability building projects, and other tasks relevant to the Office of the General Counsel’s functions.
- Undertaking other tasks relevant to the Office of the General Counsel’s functions as required.
