About the position

A Level A Academic Research Officer will be a person who identifies as Indigenous and contributes to the delivery of a team-oriented research translation project, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, that seeks to co-design, implement and evaluate culturally tailored caseload midwifery care for women having a First Nations baby in health services across Victoria.

Caseload midwifery is a model of care where women receive pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care from a primary midwife (with one or two back up midwives).

This position has been developed to enable an early-career First Nations researcher to gain expertise in research translation and collaboration, and the quantitative and qualitative research methodologies used in this project.





The role will support the cultural components of the project and engagement with First Nations communities and partner organisations to support co-designed implementation and evaluation activities.

The First Nations Research Officer will join a dedicated team of researchers working on improving maternity care provision, health outcomes and care experiences for women having a First Nations baby.

The position will be based within the Judith Lumley Centre (for women, children and family health research) in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at La Trobe’s Bundoora campus, and will work in a supportive research setting with a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of First Nations contexts, particularly relating to factors which impact upon the health and wellbeing of First Nations peoples.
Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and work in partnership with First Nations families and communities.
