About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Principal Java Developer to join a high-performing technology team responsible for supporting and enhancing a mission-critical enterprise platform that underpins emergency response and operational services across Australia.
Working within a collaborative team of experienced software engineers and technical specialists, you will design, develop, maintain and enhance enterprise applications, cloud-based integrations and backend services. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-availability systems where reliability, performance and security are essential.
Position: 2 x Principal Java/Bespoke Software Engineer (Developer) (EL2 Equivalent)
Location: Canberra ACT
Daily rate: 1000$-1300$ + super
Working Arrangement: Hybrid
Start Date: September 2026
Duration: 12 Months with potential 12 months extension
Security Clearance: Ability to Obtain Baseline Clearance
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications supporting critical business operations.
- Develop scalable backend services using Java, Spring and Spring Boot frameworks.
- Design,
develop and maintain cloud-native solutions using AWS services including EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS and CloudFormation.
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, SOAP web services and enterprise integration solutions.
- Design logical and physical data models and implement database solutions within Oracle environments.
- Develop database objects including stored procedures, packages and performance optimised SQL.
- Implement data persistence using JPA, Hibernate and other object-relational mapping frameworks.
- Develop and maintain web-based user interfaces using ReactJS, HTML and CSS where required.
- Produce high-quality technical documentation, solution designs and implementation specifications.
- Contribute to software architecture, technical design and technology roadmaps.
- Develop and support CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant.
- Perform software builds, deployments and production releases in accordance with established DevOps practices.
- Participate in system integration, unit, regression and user acceptance testing activities.
- Investigate and resolve production incidents while maintaining high system availability.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to development team members.
- Collaborate with architects, business stakeholders and senior technology leaders to deliver strategic outcomes.
- Participate in an on-call support roster for production systems as required.
About You
- Extensive commercial experience delivering enterprise Java applications within complex environments.
- Demonstrated experience with Java, Spring, Spring Boot and enterprise design patterns.
- Strong knowledge of Java EE, JPA, Hibernate and object-oriented design principles.
- Experience developing REST APIs, SOAP services, OpenAPI specifications, XML, JSON, XSD and WSDL.
- Strong Oracle database experience including SQL, PL/SQL, data modelling and stored procedures.
- Hands-on experience developing cloud solutions using AWS services.
- Experience working within Linux or Unix environments and developing Bash scripts.
- Strong knowledge of Git, Jenkins, Maven, Ant and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience working with ReactJS, HTML and CSS is highly regarded.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, secure coding practices and enterprise integration.
- Demonstrated ability to produce technical documentation and solution design artefacts.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments.
- Previous Australian Government experience will be highly regarded.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call support roster.
- Must hold valid Australian working rights. Australian Citizenship or long-term unrestricted Australian work rights are required. Sponsorship is not available. Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance is essential.
