The Role

Working from our Alanvale Campus, the Aboriginal Support Officer will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners to access, participate in and successfully complete their studies at TasTAFE. The role provides culturally safe, student-centred support across the learner journey, including course and application advice, practical assistance with study-related supports, referrals to internal and external services, advocacy, cultural guidance and support to overcome learning barriers. The role also contributes to TasTAFE’s Aboriginal Support Program through community engagement, cultural awareness activities and collaboration with staff, learners and Aboriginal community organisations.

- All references to Aboriginal also include Torres Strait Islander people. On any given day, your duties will include:
- Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners with course information, applications, enrolment processes and study-related enquiries.
- Providing culturally safe learner support, advocacy and guidance to help learners overcome barriers to participation, retention and success.
- Assisting learners to access relevant supports, including fee waivers, scholarships, tutorial support, ABSTUDY, Centrelink, Student Support Services and Aboriginal community services where appropriate.
- Building and maintaining relationships with Aboriginal community organisations, internal teams and local networks to strengthen learner pathways and support.
- Providing advice to staff and learners on Aboriginal resources, protocols, cultural matters and culturally respectful engagement.
- Supporting cultural awareness, learner engagement activities and Aboriginal Support Program initiatives, including events and community-facing activities. What will you bring - Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal societies, cultures, histories and contemporary issues, particularly in the Tasmanian context.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal learners, families, communities, staff and external stakeholders.




- Experience supporting Aboriginal people to access services, navigate systems and overcome barriers to participation and success.
- Ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively with Aboriginal community organisations, education teams and support services.
- Strong discretion, confidentiality, initiative and sound judgement when supporting learners and working with sensitive information.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and contribute to programs, services and activities that support Aboriginal participation in vocational education and training. A current Working with Vulnerable People registration, or the ability to obtain prior to commencement.
