Our advanced engineering practice runs a small, senior team that steps into intense, high-stakes engagements to solve problems other teams couldn’t — often building genuinely novel software and AI-driven solutions under pressure. Once the problem is solved, the engagement moves into its next phase of delivery, scale, and commercial complexity.
We’re looking for an Engineering Principal to lead this next phase: raising engineering excellence and maturity across our advanced software and AI engineering squads, running delivery for enterprise clients against complex, commercially demanding Statements of Work, and partnering closely with our Advanced Software Engineering Lead to keep our highest-stakes engagements on track.
This is a technical leadership role, not a hands-on engineering role. We need someone with real engineering depth and judgment — gained from years of being hands-on earlier in their career — who now leads primarily through review, direction, and coaching, and who is equally comfortable in front of an enterprise client discussing scope, commercials, and delivery risk.
What you’ll own
- Engineering excellence & maturity. Raising and maintaining engineering excellence and maturity across advanced software squads — standards, practices,
and review discipline that hold up under enterprise scrutiny.
- Advanced team management. Leading and growing advanced software engineering teams, including squads delivering AI engineering capability, balancing technical depth with delivery pace.
- Enterprise delivery. End-to-end delivery accountability for enterprise client engagements — outcomes, timelines, and client satisfaction across multiple concurrent workstreams.
- Complex SOW & commercial management. Managing complex, multi-workstream Statements of Work — scope, change control, commercial terms, and margin — in partnership with commercial and account leadership.
- Partnership, not hierarchy. A close working partnership with our Advanced Software Engineering Lead — taking on delivery and people leadership so their time stays focused on solving the next hard problem.
- Stakeholder management. Direct reporting on delivery progress, risk, and commercial performance to delivery leadership and the client.
What we’re looking for
- Technical leadership depth. Strong engineering background with genuine architectural and systems fluency — able to read a design or challenge a technical decision credibly, without needing to be the one writing the code.
- Engineering excellence. A track record of building engineering maturity in a team — standards, practices, and review culture — not just delivering individual projects.
- Squad management. Experience managing advanced software engineering squads at scale, ideally including exposure to AI/ML engineering delivery.
- Enterprise client delivery. Demonstrated success delivering software engagements for enterprise clients — comfortable being the senior delivery voice in the room.
- Commercial acumen. Hands-on experience managing complex SOWs — scope, change requests, risk, and commercials — and a genuine commercial acumen for margin and engagement economics.
- Consulting experience.
A consulting or professional services background, with the client-facing maturity and comfort with ambiguity that comes with it.
- Seniority and independence. Confidence to challenge a peer’s call and hold a position under commercial pressure — this is a peer role, not a subordinate one.
- Communication. Clear, structured written and verbal communication — equally credible with engineers and with enterprise client sponsors.
- Executive engagement. Proven ability to engage and influence at executive level — articulating software delivery progress, risk, and trade-offs in terms that land with C-suite and senior client sponsors.
- AI-to-business articulation. Skilled at translating AI engineering delivery into business outcomes — framing technical work as value, risk reduction, or commercial advantage from a consulting engagement perspective.
- Multi-country delivery experience. Experience delivering software engagements across multiple countries — comfortable with the cultural, regulatory, and coordination complexity that comes with distributed, multi-country delivery.
Nice to have
- Experience standing up or scaling an AI engineering practice within a consulting or enterprise delivery context.
- Formal commercial/contract management exposure (e.g. MSA/SOW negotiation, pricing models).
- Background in a top-tier consulting, systems-integrator, or professional services firm.
What we’re not looking for A pure people manager with limited technical spine, or a deep hands-on specialist who prefers writing code to leading a team and a client relationship — this role needs someone who has been strong technically, chose leadership, and is equally credible on engineering judgment and commercial delivery. Location & ways of working
Based in Sydney or Melbourne, with a hybrid working pattern. Regular presence with clients and the team is expected given the nature of enterprise engagements and the need for close partnership with the Advanced Software Engineering Lead and client stakeholders. Some domestic travel between engagements may be required.
How to apply
Please submit your CV along with a short note on a time you took over a system someone else built under pressure — and how you made it boring again.
