About AlmostBio
AlmostBio Pty Ltd is a Sydney-based biotechnology company focused on cell-free discovery technologies and related biochemical research workflows. The company develops and applies advanced in vitro platforms, including mRNA display, to support discovery of peptide and affinity reagents and related assay-enabling workflows.
AlmostBio is building its research and development capabilities in Australia and is focused on expanding its technical platform and laboratory operations. Its work includes experimental platform development, molecular biology workflows, biochemical screening, and analysis of nucleic acids, peptides, proteins, and related biomolecules in a commercial research environment.
About the Role
AlmostBio is seeking a hands-on Biochemist to perform laboratory research and development focused on mRNA display and related biochemical discovery workflows. The role requires careful execution of wet-laboratory work, accurate experimental documentation, data interpretation, method optimisation and practical troubleshooting within agreed project priorities.
The successful candidate will contribute to the planning and execution of experiments involving biological macromolecules, including nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins. The role will include hands-on work across assay execution, molecular biology workflows, biochemical analysis, and accurate experimental documentation.
This is a laboratory-based position within a growing biotechnology company, with scope to contribute to method development and day-to-day experimental problem-solving under scientific supervision.
Salary: AUD 92,000 statutory superannuation
Key Responsibilities
Plan and perform wet-lab experiments supporting mRNA display and related in vitro discovery workflows.
Prepare, handle, and analyse biological macromolecules including DNA, RNA, peptides, proteins,
and associated reagents.
Execute molecular biology procedures relevant to cell-free discovery workflows, including PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, template preparation, and transcription- or translation-related steps where required.
Perform experiments involving RNA handling and other nuclease-sensitive workflow steps with appropriate care and attention to reproducibility.
Support selection, screening, binding, and assay-based evaluation of peptide and protein interactions.
Perform biochemical assays and mRNA display workflow optimisation to improve reproducibility, data quality, and overall experimental performance.
Prepare and process samples for downstream biochemical analysis.
Record, interpret, and summarise experimental results while maintaining detailed laboratory notebooks, batch records, protocols, reagent traceability records, and supporting research documentation.
Work collaboratively with other team members to support project timelines and experimental priorities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field, together with relevant hands-on laboratory experience; or
Master's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
Required Technical Skills and Experience
Hands-on wet-lab experience in biochemistry or molecular biology.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with mRNA display in an experimental research setting.
Experience working with nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins in laboratory workflows.
Practical experience with PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, template preparation, and transcription- or translation-related laboratory workflows.
Experience supporting or performing cell-free or in vitro biochemical workflows involving careful experimental optimisation and reproducible execution.
Experience performing, documenting, and interpreting biochemical or molecular assays.
Ability to analyse experimental results, identify technical issues, and contribute to troubleshooting.
Robust laboratory record-keeping, protocol documentation, and reagent traceability skills.
Careful, organised, and reproducible approach to experimental work in a research environment.
Preferred Skills
Additional experience with other cell-free or in vitro biomolecular discovery workflows.
Experience with peptide or protein binding assays, screening assays, or related assay systems.
Experience working in biotechnology, contract research, or applied laboratory research environments.
Familiarity with experimental design and assay optimisation for biomolecular discovery workflows.
Familiarity with handling multiple related workflow steps across molecular biology, assay execution, and biochemical analysis within an expanding biotechnology operation.
Reporting Line
This role reports to the Director within AlmostBio.
