About Spiral Blue
Spiral Blue is an innovative Australian space technology startup dedicated to advancing space domain awareness, proximity operations, and Earth observation through cutting-edge LiDAR and edge computing systems. We are a fast-paced team focused on rapid prototyping and deployment of critical sensing capabilities for the new space economy and addressing the challenge of climate change. Join us to take ownership of complex business systems and contribute directly to the development of Australia’s space industry.
The Role: We are looking for 2x interns, a mechanical engineering and electronics intern.
Location: On-site, Eveleigh, Sydney
Duration: Flexible, to suit student availability and course/placement requirements
Please note this is an unpaid internship, structured as a vocational placement in line with your institution's course requirements. Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical: Support the space systems engineering and mechanical design team, including CAD modelling and design iteration;
Assist with prototyping, testing, and hands-on build activities;
Documentation and engineering report writing support;
Presentation of reports internally and externally Electronics: Support the space electronics systems engineering team with the following activities:
Electronics read-out circuit design
Documentation and engineering report writing
Presentation of reports internally and externally Requirements (both roles):
Be in the latter stages of studying a relevant degree or qualification (2nd year or later)
Be enthusiastic about space, Earth observation, tackling climate change, and defence technology
Have the right to work in Australia, with citizenship in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, South Korea, or another European country Desired:
Mechanical
Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
Familiarity with mechanical design principles for aerospace or other high-reliability environments
Exposure to GD&T;, tolerancing,
or DFM/DFA concepts
Interest or coursework in structural analysis, thermal management, or materials selection
Experience with prototyping tools (3D printing, workshop/machine tools)
Strong written communication skills, with an interest in technical report writing
Electronics
Experience with schematic capture and PCB design tools;
Familiarity with analog and/or mixed-signal circuit design, including read-out or sensor interface electronics;
Understanding of signal integrity, noise, and low-power design considerations;
Exposure to embedded systems, FPGA, or microcontroller-based designs;
Experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters) for testing and debugging;
Strong written communication skills, with an interest in technical report writing Key learning opportunities:
Hands-on exposure to the design and development from concept through to prototype
Direct mentorship from senior engineers on space-grade design constraints Experience writing engineering documentation and reports to a skilled/industry standard
Opportunity to present technical work to internal and external stakeholders
Insight into how engineering design integrates with systems engineering in a real space hardware program
Exposure to the operational realities of a fast-moving space startup Why Join Spiral Blue?
The primary focus of this role is the intern's development. You will receive hands-on training and high-level mentorship from our leadership team.
You will be building a portfolio centered on cutting-edge hardware and Earth Observation. This is a massive differentiator for your future career in tech, government, or aerospace marketing.
Contribute to Australia's growing space sector.
Help tackle climate change and other major civilisational challenges.
Join a culture of rapid innovation and impact, where your contributions are immediately visible. This internship is intended as a vocational placement for students currently enrolled in a relevant tertiary course (e.g. Engineering) where a placement is a requirement of their studies.
