Job Description
Help manage the iconic Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers while developing skills across waterway management, asset maintenance, compliance, stakeholder engagement and environmental protection. This diverse, hands-on role offers opportunities to work on unique waterways, support events and projects, and gain experience in vessel operations as part of a team-oriented and high-performing team.
- Help manage the Yarra and Maribyrnton Rivers as part of the Waterways team

- Enjoy a varied role combining asset management, stakeholder engagement, event management and environmental protection while working in a unique workplace in inner Melbourne., The position will have a diverse range of responsibilities, with a focus particularly in relation to waterways facility and asset management, regulatory compliance, project management and land management, while working as part of a dynamic, multi-functioned team. There are opportunities for development with stakeholder and community engagement, as well as vessel and plant operations, including support in obtaining a Coxswain marine license. The ranger may have occasional direct responsibility for the supervision of casual staff, contractors and volunteers.
The Ranger will demonstrate a strong personal work ethic and actively participate in a team environment ensuring that the overall success of the team is considered to be an outcome of individual success. The Ranger will be adaptable and flexible to on the ground service requirements in order to ensure superior park and waterway management services are achieved at all times
About the Team
The Waterways Unit is responsible for management of the navigable sections of the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers, which includes a variety of waterway and terrestrial assets and land parcels. As the designated Waterway Manager under the Marine Safety Act and Water Industry Act, Parks Victoria holds a broad range of responsibilities and powers relating to visitor management, asset management, litter management, on-water event management, and regulatory compliance activities.
About the Candidate
- Relevant qualifications and skills for the on-ground management of the Parks Victoria estate, such as carpentry or trade skills, environmental science, conservation and land management, outdoor education.
- Relevant experience or qualifications with vessel operations would be beneficial.
- Proven capacity to work constructively with colleagues, contractors, members of the public, volunteer groups and park users in delivering on-ground services and projects in parks and reserves
- Demonstrated experience in customer service, communication and interpersonal skills
- Availability to work weekends and public holidays as required
