Provide actuarial leadership and oversight across reserving, regulatory reporting, reinsurance management, capital monitoring, and portfolio performance for Redion Australia's travel insurance business.
The role is accountable for ensuring the integrity of insurance liabilities, delivering high-quality APRA and Board reporting, supporting reinsurance strategy and performance management, and providing actuarial insights that influence portfolio, underwriting, pricing, and product decisions.
The Lead Actuary partners closely with Commercial, Finance, Product, Claims, and Risk teams to ensure sustainable portfolio performance, robust governance, and compliance with regulatory and insurer requirements. The role reports to the Chief Insurance Officer and serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on actuarial and insurance risk matters.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reserving & Actuarial Valuation
- Lead the quarterly actuarial reserving process, ensuring accurate estimation and monitoring of outstanding claims liabilities and reserve adequacy.
- Perform liability valuation analysis, including experience investigations, claims trend analysis, and stress testing.
- Provide actuarial insights on portfolio performance drivers, emerging risks, claims experience, and profitability.
- Develop and enhance reserving methodologies, controls, and governance frameworks.
APRA & Regulatory Reporting
- Act as the primary liaison and support for the Appointed Actuary, ensuring timely delivery of actuarial analysis, regulatory reporting, and governance requirements.
- Lead preparation and review of APRA regulatory submissions and actuarial reporting requirements.
- Support capital management, solvency monitoring, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Provide actuarial input into Board, insurer, auditor, and regulator reporting.
- Maintain actuarial documentation, governance processes,
and compliance with relevant prudential standards.
- Support design, assessment, and ongoing monitoring of reinsurance arrangements.
- Analyse reinsurance treaty performance, retention levels, recoveries, and portfolio protection outcomes.
- Provide actuarial input into reinsurance renewals, negotiations, and insurer discussions.
- Monitor reinsurance recoveries and assess impacts on profitability, capital, and portfolio performance.
- Monitor portfolio performance across products, distribution partners, customer segments, and geographies.
- Identify emerging trends in claims frequency, severity, loss ratios, and risk exposures.
- Support portfolio optimisation by providing recommendations on underwriting, pricing, product design, and risk management strategies.
- Collaborate with Claims and Portfolio teams to understand drivers of performance and implement corrective actions where required.
Strategic Actuarial Support
- Provide actuarial advice to support business planning, forecasting, budgeting, and strategic initiatives.
- Support evaluation of recent products, partnerships, distribution opportunities, and commercial initiatives.
- Contribute to insurance risk management frameworks and enterprise risk assessments.
- Present actuarial findings, recommendations, and portfolio insights to senior management and key stakeholders.
Stakeholder Management & Leadership
- Build strong relationships with insurers, reinsurers, auditors, regulators,
and internal stakeholders.
- Act as the primary actuarial subject matter expert across the organisation.
- Lead actuarial projects and support development of analytical capability within the team.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and sound risk management.
- Maintain effective actuarial controls and governance across reserving, APRA reporting, reinsurance, and capital activities.
- Support the identification, assessment, and monitoring of insurance risks and emerging trends.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, APRA requirements, and actuarial professional standards.
- Provide actuarial input to risk committees, audits, and governance forums.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Fellow of the Actuaries Institute.
- 8+ years actuarial experience within the general insurance industry.
- Strong experience in actuarial reserving, liability valuation, and insurance performance analysis.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing APRA regulatory reporting and capital‑related analysis.
- Solid understanding of reinsurance structures, treaty arrangements, recoveries, and renewal processes.
- Experience in travel insurance or other short‑tail general insurance classes highly regarded.
- Strong analytical, commercial, and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Advanced Excel skills with experience using SQL, Python, R, or other actuarial modelling tools desirable.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with executives, insurers, reinsurers, auditors, and regulators.
- Proven ability to influence decision‑making through clear actuarial insights and recommendations.
