Think & Grow

City of Sydney

Think & Grow is a global growth advisory, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Melbourne, with a global team across 30+ cities. We're the only advisory that delivers the entire Growth Stack (strategy, technology, and talent) under one roof. Over the past decade we've helped 650+ technology companies grow, filled 500+ leadership roles, and delivered work across 22 countries. Clients include AWS, Stripe, Snowflake, Canva, Xero, Spotify and Harrison.ai.

Our AI Practice helps boards, founders and executive teams turn AI from concept into commercial advantage. We're operators who've built and scaled companies, not career consultants. Our work is grounded in where AI creates real commercial value, how you govern it, and how your people actually adopt it. Not hype. We don't run pilots that go nowhere. Our work has to show up in our clients' P&Ls.;

About the Role

We're scaling the AI Practice in 2026 using a city-based squad model, where each squad owns the full client lifecycle in its market.

The Sydney AI Engineer is the technical lead for client builds. The technical brain in the room for diagnostics, architecture decisions and prototype-to-production work. You'll partner with the Sydney AI PM and AI Data Engineer to deliver as a complete team.

This role is hands‑on, client‑facing, and commercial. You'll make the architecture calls, ship the systems, and hold the engineering seat in client rooms independently. Not optional.

What You'll Do

- Design and ship agentic systems for clients, including multi‑agent orchestration, tool use, memory, and evaluation, from prototype through to production on the client's stack.
- Make architecture and tooling calls on engagements: model selection, orchestration framework, evaluation strategy, deployment pattern.
- Translate business problems into technical solutions in collaboration with PMs and clients.
- Build evaluation frameworks for client AI systems, covering accuracy, bias, cost, latency and hallucination, so success is measured rigorously, not asserted.
- Set the technical bar in the squad. Pair, review and unblock other engineers and data engineers as needed.

- Step into client conversations when technical credibility matters: diagnostics, architecture reviews, governance discussions.
- Build security and governance into every AI system you touch, including access boundaries, prompt injection defences and PII handling before model transit. Not a post‑build checklist. Part of the architecture from day one.

You’ll Be Successful If You...

- Have at least two years building and shipping AI‑enabled products or systems into production, with concrete examples of what you built, the tools and models used, why you chose them, and the outcome it delivered.
- Have built multi‑agent systems end‑to‑end and can walk through the architecture, the failure modes, and the production decisions without a script.
- Are hands‑on with the modern AI stack: LLM orchestration (LangChain, LlamaIndex or equivalent), vector databases, evaluation tooling (LangSmith, Braintrust or equivalent), prompt engineering, prompt caching, batch processing, retrieval design and MLOps fundamentals.
- Have cloud fluency across AWS, Azure or GCP, including AI services on at least one platform.
- Use AI‑augmented development as your default, whether Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot or equivalent, and can articulate clearly where vibe‑coding is appropriate and where rigour is non‑negotiable.
- Can explain technical decisions to non‑technical stakeholders without losing accuracy.
- Have a track record of measurable outcomes: system performance, cost reduced, time saved, revenue enabled.
- Have the right to work in Australia.

Nice to Have

- AWS, Azure or GCP certification (AI Practitioner, Solutions Architect or equivalent).
- Experience with Amazon Bedrock, AgentCore or equivalent enterprise agentic deployment platforms.

- Consulting or professional services experience.
- Domain experience in our target verticals: financial services, retail, professional services, healthcare, government.
- Experience with fine‑tuning, RLHF, voice or vision, real‑time streaming, or sovereign deployment.

This Role Might Not Be for You If...

- You've built great things but only for internal teams and aren't ready to own the client room.
- You need a fully formed tech stack and a transparent brief before you can start. We're building it together.
- You treat security and governance as a post‑launch problem.
- You prefer depth over delivery pace and struggle with ambiguity.
- You don't enjoy feedback, change or collaborating across a squad.

What Success Looks Like

- AI systems delivered for clients with measurable performance metrics: accuracy, deflection, automation rate, cost reduction.
- Sydney squad's technical practices match or beat the rest of the practice on quality, velocity and cost.
- Reusable components contributed to the internal Think & Grow AI platform.
- Comfortable representing the practice technically in client conversations and at events.

What's in It for You

- Flexible hours: early bird or school run, we work to outcomes, not a clock.
- Hybrid setup: 3 days in the office, 2 from home.
- Global exposure: option to work overseas for a period each year.
- Inclusive parental leave for all parents: birth, adoption and surrogacy.
- Learning days + a budget you actually get to use.
- EAP: confidential wellbeing support for you and your immediate family.
- A founding role with P&L; visibility and direct access to founders, C‑suite clients, and a network built over 25 years in the market.
- Written feedback at every stage of our hiring process, regardless of outcome.

Research shows 60% of women and members of traditionally underrepresented communities might have already talked themselves out of applying, even if they don't check every box. Please apply anyway. We care about potential, perspective, and values.
