We are seeking an experienced Lead Optical Network Engineer to support the operation, sustainment and optimisation of a mission-critical optical transport and data centre network environment within a large Federal Government organisation.
This opportunity would suit a senior telecommunications or optical networking skilled with extensive experience supporting CIENA optical transport networks, DWDM technologies, and Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) solutions.
The Opportunity
You will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing critical ICT infrastructure across multiple secure data centre environments. Working within a highly skilled infrastructure team, you will provide specialist expertise across optical transport networks, fibre infrastructure, data centre connectivity and carrier services.
This position requires a hands‑on engineer who is comfortable working across both operational support and infrastructure implementation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineer, operate and support CIENA optical transport platforms.
- Manage DWDM‑based Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) services.
- Install, test and support fibre optic and copper cabling infrastructure.
- Support data centre network and optical transport environments.
- Troubleshoot network and infrastructure issues to ensure service availability and performance.
- Coordinate carrier, vendor and internal stakeholder activities.
- Undertake rack preparation, equipment installation and commissioning activities.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including designs, build guides and operational procedures.
- Ensure all activities comply with organisational standards, processes and security requirements.
- Minimum 5 years' experience supporting and engineering CIENA optical transport networks.
- Strong expertise in DWDM technologies and Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) environments.
- Demonstrated experience designing, provisioning, testing and optimising optical network infrastructure.
- Experience with fibre connectivity, carrier services and end‑to‑end service commissioning.
- Strong troubleshooting and operational support capabilities within enterprise or data centre environments.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Australian Government security clearances.
- High-Level Design (HLD) and Low-Level Design (LLD) documentation.
- Experience within Federal Government or other large enterprise environments.
- Data centre operations experience including rack installations and structured cabling.
- Telecommunications carrier engagement and circuit provisioning experience.
- Hardware lifecycle and infrastructure management experience.
Security Requirements
Candidates must hold an Australian Government NV1 clearance and demonstrate the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain higher-level clearances.
