Make a Real Impact at Sussex Street

Sussex Street is a leading not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting social justice. Since 1978, we have supported individuals and communities across Western Australia through legal services, disability advocacy, tenant advocacy, financial counselling, community education, and law reform.

About the Role

The Night Legal Service Coordinator is responsible for establishing, coordinating and quality assuring Sussex Street's Night Legal Service. The role works closely with private practitioners, law firms, universities and students to develop a sustainable pro bono legal service that increases access to justice for people experiencing disadvantage.

The position provides professional oversight and supervision of legal services delivered through the Night Legal Service, develops strategic partnerships across the legal profession, and contributes to the ongoing growth and improvement of Sussex Street's generalist legal services.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the implementation and ongoing coordination of the Night Legal Service.

- Develop and maintain partnerships with law firms, private practitioners, universities and other legal sector stakeholders.

- Recruit, support and engage pro bono lawyers participating in the service.

- Provide legal supervision and quality assurance to ensure services meet professional and ethical standards.

- Support the development and supervision of a student legal clinic and law student placements.

- Monitor service outcomes, manage reporting requirements and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

- Promote the Night Legal Service and contribute to broader service development and access to justice initiatives.

What We’re Looking For

You are more than your qualifications—you are someone who is committed to social justice, thrives on building meaningful partnerships, and is motivated by creating opportunities for people experiencing disadvantage to access high-quality legal support. The ideal candidate will meet the following selection criteria:

- Admitted to legal practice in Western Australia and holder of an unrestricted practising certificate.

- Minimum 5 years post-admission experience, preferably across family law, civil law and/or criminal law.

- Demonstrated experience supervising legal practitioners, students, volunteers or junior lawyers.

- Robust professional networks and relationships within the Western Australian legal profession.

- Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with private legal practitioners and law firms.

- Sound understanding of legal risk management, professional obligations and quality assurance requirements.

- Demonstrated ability to build effective stakeholder relationships and influence outcomes without direct authority.

- Highly developed communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.

- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders.

- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, access to justice and community legal practice.
