In an era of rapid geopolitical and technological change, we illuminate the future and help safeguard the nation. Formed under the Office of National Intelligence Act 2018, we lead the National Intelligence Community and are the principal advisory agency to the Prime Minister on intelligence matters. We are the senior intelligence assessment body in Australia and we work on the leading edge of the nation's intelligence capabilities, driving new ideas and technologies.

Eligibility requirements

You must be an Australian citizen.

You must have a checkable background.

- We must be able to practically verify, from independent and reliable sources, (cumulative) periods of 12 months or more spent outside Australia.

You must be willing to undergo an organisational pre-employment assessment.

- A Pre-employment Screening Assessment (PSA) is a mandatory requirement to work in ONI, unless prior approval is provided by the Director-General and/or Deputy Director-General(s). The PSA is conducted to determine suitability to work in a high security environment and the extent to which you are likely to meet the current needs of the organisation. This assessment includes behavioural and psychometric testing. No feedback will be provided on the outcome of the PSA to any applicant.

You must be willing to undergo a comprehensive security clearance suitability assessment.

- A security clearance is a qualifying condition of employment with ONI.
- To be considered suitable for a security clearance, we must establish that you possess and demonstrate the highest level of trustworthiness and commitment to Australia,

its values and its democratic system of government.
- Our security clearance process covers all aspects of your life – it is comprehensive and can seem intrusive. The national interest is the primary consideration in determining the outcome of a security clearance assessment.
- If you attain a security clearance, you are required to maintain your clearance for the term of your employment. You will be subject a wide range of responsibilities and obligations, some of which will impinge on your personal life. ONI will continuously review your ongoing clearance suitability.
- Further information will be provided as a candidate progresses through this process. But please note, we do not provide specific feedback about any aspect of our security processes.

You must be able to work at our Canberra office.

- Due to the nature of our work, we are unable to offer a remote working arrangement. If your application is successful, you will need to reside where a daily commute to our Canberra office, located in Barton ACT, is feasible.

Key information

- If you apply, there is no guarantee an offer of employment will be made.
- Your application will remain active until 30 June 2027.
- We will ask you to provide the contact details of at least one referee that can attest to your work performance prior to making any offer of employment.
- Should you be offered employment, it can be only on a non-ongoing basis for a period of up to 12 months initially, and for a maximum period of 18 months. Employment cannot be offered beyond this term, and regardless of the length of the term, only one extension is permissible.
- A probationary period will apply to any new non-ongoing engagement.
- Ongoing engagement or promotion under the Public Service Act 1999 are not possible or available through this register.

- If you are currently an ongoing APS employee or an ongoing employee employed under the Intelligence Services Act 2001, this Non-Ongoing Talent Register does not apply to you - please register your interest on our Temporary & Permanent s26 Transfer Register 2026 - 2027.
