Primary purpose of position
Reporting to the Setting Strategy Lead, this role sits within the environmental strategy stream of the business unit to deliver strategic environmental management. The purpose of the Environmental Advisor position is to provide support, advice and guidance on strategic environmental management relating to our Ports, including the implementation of Planet initiatives as part of Port Vision 2050 to ensure that the Port achieves its corporate objectives, including decarbonisation, industry leading practices and partnerships for healthy reefs and ecosystems.
Position specific responsibilities
• Provide support and advice on the implementation of Planet programs of work, including managing allocated budgets and resources and monitoring and evaluating and reporting in accordance with established frameworks
• Provide support as required to the Dry Tropics and Wet Tropics Partnerships for Healthy Waters partnerships
• Assist with integrating sustainability aspects into the Integrated Management System (IMS) empowering staff with relevant training, process and tools
• Provide support and advice on the implementation of the Port’s environmental management framework, working as a business unit with internal and external stakeholders to minimise emissions and potential impacts on the environments and communities around the Port. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting inspections and observations, assessing port notice permits, incident, complaint and fauna response
• Support the Asset Management & Planning business unit to ensure environment and climate related matters are integrated into the Port’s planning dealings and project developments. This includes reviewing planning dealings for strategic environmental aspects (e.g. land owner consents, development approvals, sustainable port guidelines, land use plans), providing input into the Port’s development Plan and reviewing projects and activities for environmental sustainability aspects (e.g. carbon emissions, renewable energy) during the design and planning phase
• Provide support for the implementation of the Port’s environmental and biosecurity monitoring programs
• Project management of assigned environmental projects, contracts or consultancies
• Prepare relevant internal and external reports related to the strategic environmental management stream of the business unit (e.g. Qld Climate Action Plan reporting, Ecobiz)
• Provide advice on complex matters, including strategic environmental management, sustainability and climate trends, regulations and innovations to ensure that the Port’s approach remains contemporary
• Engage with external stakeholders, including key customers and government, to progress positive outcomes for the Port
• Represent and advocate for the Port as required on environmental, sustainability and climate matters to external organisations and community groups as required
• Assist with monitoring and reporting on the unit’s corporate requirements, including key performance indicators and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
• Promote a culture that is consistent with Port Vision, mission and values
