Austral Fisheries is seeking an experienced and motivated marine technical professional to join our Southern Ocean Fleet team in Perth.

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to support the operation of one of the world’s most advanced and unique deep-sea fishing fleets operating in remote sub-Antarctic waters.

Working closely with the Technical Superintendent, the successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the maintenance, reliability, compliance and provisioning of the fleet, both remotely and during international vessel port calls and layup periods.

This role is intended to develop into a position capable of independently coordinating technical operations, supporting vessel crews, managing contractors and overseeing maintenance activities.

About the Operation

Austral Fisheries operates a modern Southern Ocean fleet targeting Patagonian toothfish and mackerel icefish in the remote sub-Antarctic waters surrounding Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

Operating in one of the harshest and most isolated marine environments in the world, the fleet undertakes extended voyages with a robust focus on safety, reliability and operational performance.

The fleet includes the recently delivered Austral Odyssey and the multi-purpose trawler and longliner Cape Arkona, both highly advanced vessels.

The role offers exposure to a wide range of vessel systems, international logistics, overseas shipyards and complex marine operations.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Technical Superintendent, responsibilities will include:

- Supporting the day-to-day technical management of the Southern Ocean fleet

- Working within a small Southern Fleet technical team, supporting vessels

- Support the management and operation of the fleet's planned maintenance system (HELM)

- Attending international vessel port calls, dockings as required.

- Assist in coordinating contractors and suppliers to ensure quality and timely completion of works.





- Providing technical support to vessel crews operating remotely at sea.

- Assisting with fault finding and troubleshooting across vessel mechanical, hydraulic, refrigeration, electrical and electronic systems.

- Manage the procurement and shipping of all vessel spare parts internationally.

- Promoting and maintaining a strong safety and compliance culture across all operations

- Supporting technical projects, vessel upgrades and ongoing fleet improvement initiatives

About You

We are seeking someone with strong practical technical capability, good judgement and the ability to operate calmly and professionally in a demanding operational environment.

The successful applicant will ideally possess:

- Marine engineering qualification, ETO qualification, electrical/mechanical trade qualification or equivalent industry experience.

- Experience working with commercial vessels, offshore vessels or complex marine systems

- Strong understanding of marine electrical, automation and integrated vessel systems

- Ability to troubleshoot and coordinate technical issues independently

- Strong organisational and communication skills

- Ability to work effectively with vessel crews, contractors and suppliers

- High level of personal accountability and professionalism

- Willingness to travel internationally and attend vessels outside normal working hours where required

- Current driver’s licence and ability to obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)

Desirable Experience

- Shipyard, docking or port call coordination experience

- Experience with marine electronics,



PLC systems or vessel automation systems

- Experience with refrigeration, hydraulic or processing equipment

- Previous experience in remote marine operations

- Previous experience in procurement and logistics.

- STCW safety training

- Working at Heights and Confined Space certifications

- Additional language skills including Indonesian or French

Important Information About the Role

This is not a FIFO position and is not a standard office-based engineering role.

The Southern Ocean Fleet operates internationally and in remote regions, with vessel schedules, port calls and operational priorities often changing quickly.

The successful applicant must be comfortable with extensive international travel, short-notice operational requirements and periods of irregular working hours associated with vessel arrivals, shipyard periods and technical support activities.

Travel will primarily involve attendance in international ports such as Mauritius, overseas shipyards, suppliers and vessel locations outside Australia.

The role is best suited to someone who enjoys operational environments, problem solving and being directly involved in vessel operations rather than a purely office-based position.
