Primary objective In consultation with senior staff be responsible for the establishment, implementation and management of field trials or experiments in a range of cropping industries in the Darwin, Katherine and Douglas Daly regions.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Provide need-based support to the senior staff in the design of field trials or experiments.
- Conduct research trials, demonstration sites and extension projects through sustainable management practices on a range of agricultural crops in conjunction with DAF staff and stakeholders.
- Contribute to formulating,
recommending and implementation of recent techniques and ideas in research trials and observation sites.
- Collect data associated with research, extension and development projects; and prepare draft outputs.
- Provide input and advice on research, development and extension programs within the Plant Industries.
- Plan and coordinate demonstrations, field-days and show displays for producers and the general public.
- Supervise and train the support staff in implementation of the day-to-day field activities.
- Maintenance and upkeep of the cropping blocks.
- Maintain and safely operate specialist field equipment and machinery in a farm setting, with a focus on cropping operations.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Extensive work experience in agriculture sector in general and crops production in specific. Experience of working with tropical field crops preferred.
- Knowledge of experimental procedures and application of scientific rigour to research in a range of plant-based industries.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake field-based research and demonstration activities with attention to detail, including monitoring trials, collecting data, maintaining accurate records and collating experimental results.
- Effective written and oral communication skills (report writing) including the ability to communicate with a range of land use stakeholders.
- Sound knowledge and ability to safely operate specialised equipment and machinery in an operational farm setting.
- Current driver’s licence Class C or equivalent.
- Experience in the use of general computer programs and software.
Desirable
- Diploma in Agricultural Sciences.
Further information
This position is based at the Katherine Research Station in Katherine but is expected to perform duties at Northern Territory
Government research farms across the Northern Territory.
