About the opportunity
Veritas Recruitment is partnering exclusively with a growing organisation based in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne to appoint an experienced Group Payroll Manager to lead the transformation of its payroll function.
Reporting directly to the CEO and CFO, this is a rare opportunity for a senior payroll leader to take ownership of a critical business project. The organisation is committed to bringing its outsourced payroll function back in-house and is seeking someone who has successfully led a similar transformation previously.
This is not just a BAU payroll management role. It requires a commercially minded payroll professional with the expertise to build a best-practice payroll function, lead a high-performing team and deliver a seamless transition from an external provider to an internally managed operation.
The Role
You will be responsible for leading the end-to-end payroll transformation while continuing to oversee payroll operations across Australia and New Zealand.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the transition of a large, complex outsourced payroll function back in-house
- Finalize and optimise the current payroll system implementation, ensuring it is fit for purpose
- Develop and implement the payroll operating model, processes, controls and governance framework
- Manage the relationship with the outsourced payroll provider throughout the transition, ensuring accountability and service delivery
- Lead, mentor and develop a small payroll team, creating a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
- Oversee payroll processing for approximately 1,500 employees across weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls
- Ensure compliance with all Australian and Recent Zealand payroll legislation, Awards, Enterprise Agreements, STP, Payday Super and statutory reporting obligations
- Establish robust policies, reconciliations, documentation and audit controls
- Partner closely with Finance, HR and operational leaders, providing strategic payroll advice and reporting
About You
To be successful in this role, you will be an accomplished payroll leader with demonstrated experience delivering complex payroll transformation projects.
You will bring:
- Proven experience as a Group Payroll Manager or Senior Payroll Manager with in a large, complex organisation
- Previous success bringing an outsourced payroll function back in-house from planning through to successful implementation
- Extensive experience leading payroll system implementations, optimisation or transformation projects
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian and New Zealand payroll legislation and compliance
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to influence executives, operational leaders and external vendors
- A hands‑on leadership style with the ability to balance strategic thinking with operational delivery
- Resilience, commercial acumen and the ability to drive change while maintaining payroll continuity
