Medical Practitioner Employment Register
The Medical Practitioner Employment Register provides the Department of Health with a pool of experienced and skilled people who can work at short notice. Candidates may apply for duties on a fixed‑term or casual basis. The Register remains open until 30 June 2027 and is reviewed regularly.
Job Positions
Positions offered include:
- Career Medical Officer – Level 1‑7 – $128,750–$183,340 per annum
- Senior Career Medical Officer – Level 1‑3 – $187,460–$206,000 per annum
- Registrar / Senior Registrar – Medical Practitioner Level 5‑11 – $134,930–$189,005 per annum
- Resident Medical Officer – Medical Practitioner Level 2‑4 – $95,275–$108,150 per annum
- Rural Medical Practitioner – Level 1 – $185.16 per hour
- Specialist / Senior Specialist – Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1‑11 – $216,300–$296,640 per annum
- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner – Level 1‑3 – $300,216–$310,389 per annum
- Visiting Medical Practitioner – Level 1‑2 – $128.61–$144.55 per hour ($149.21–$168.45 rolled up rate) per hour
- Visiting Medical Specialist – Level 1‑4 – $161.67–$194.30 per hour ($187.50–$225.38 rolled up rate) per hour
Additional Qualifications for Specific Levels
- Senior Registrar: four years of postgraduate experience, enrolment in a recognised specialty training programme,
successful completion of all fellowship examinations relevant to training, within one year of obtaining specialist fellowship.
- Senior Resident Medical Officer: general or unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia and a minimum of four years relevant postgraduate experience.
- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner (Level 1‑3): must satisfy criteria described in Clause 20 of the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
- Visiting Medical Specialist Level 4: must satisfy criteria described in Schedule 3 of the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners Agreement 2019.
Essential Requirements
- Conviction checks: crimes of violence, sex‑related offences, responsible drug offences, crimes involving dishonesty, identification check, and disciplinary action in previous employment check.
- Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration for some roles.
Desirable Requirements
- Current driver’s licence for some roles.
