About the Company
Our client is an independent, owner-operated specialist and emergency hospital in Sydney's south. It runs a 24 hour advanced treatment centre alongside a mobile service supporting referring clinics across Greater Sydney, covering surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, imaging and a number of other disciplines
It has grown quickly over recent years, and the desire for commercial acumen in finance has now reached a point where it's time to hire.
About the Role
Finance here has been run by a relatively lean team and a technically astute General Manager. The weekly reporting pack has been built by an external resource for the past two years. That work now needs an owner inside the business, and this is the seat.
You would own the weekly managementpack, rebuild the Excel reporting into something maintainable, and develop service line reporting so the profitability of each clinical discipline and the mobile business can be seen properly.
Alongside that sits the harder and more interesting half of the job: rostering and labour. Award rates, planned overtime, on-call clinicians and after-hours call-ins make workforce cost the single most complex area in the business, and modelling it before decisions are made is where this role earns its keep.
There is also a real data problem to solve. Basic operational questions around case volumes, imaging throughput, overnight admissions and emergency to surgery conversion should be answerable reliably and are not yet. Fixing that at the source, rather than patching it in a spreadsheet,
is part of the mandate.
The intention is that this grows into a Commercial Business Partner role, the conduit between finance, operations and the clinical floor. This is a five-day onsite role.
Responsibilities
- Own the weekly management reporting pack, including revenue by specialist against budget, staff cost to revenue ratios and labour variance analysis;
- Rebuild the existing Excel reporting into a cleaner structure with proper master data tables, and build dashboards giving the owners and department heads a live view;
- Develop service line and discipline level reporting across the hospital and the mobile business;
- Analyse rostering and time and attendance data, and model the cost impact of headcount, roster changes and award movements before decisions are made;
- Run the annual budget process alongside the General Manager and fractional CFO, and build and maintain cash flow forecasting;
- Support pricing work across the clinical disciplines;
- Build the business case and payback analysis behind equipment and capital decisions;
- Take ownership of data quality across the clinical and financial systems,
troubleshoot at source and train clinical staff on accurate data entry; and
- Track referral activity, support debtor and insurance claim reporting, and be available to the owners for the ad hoc commercial question that needs a considered answer quickly.
Ideal Background
- Part-qualified or intention to start a CPA/ CA;
- Genuinely strong Excel, including modelling and large data sets, with the discipline to build something another person can pick up;
- A real data skillset, comfortable interrogating imperfect source systems and fixing the problem rather than working around it;
- Experience in an workplace with rostered or award-based workforces, whether hospital or healthcare, aged care, multi-site retail or similar;
- Excellent communication, because a good part of this job happens on the floor with clinicians and department heads; and
- Curious and proactive, and comfortable in a small team where the answer is rarely already prepared for you.
Benefits
- The first dedicated commercial finance seat in the business, with the build genuinely yours rather than inherited;
- Exposure to the owners and the clinical leadership directly, in a business small enough that your work is visible;
- Based in Sydney's south, five days onsite, with flexibility open to discussion once you are established; and
- A close, independent team where culture is taken seriously rather than talked about.
