Role Overview

As a System Development Engineer, you will build, operate, monitor, and assure the AWS network across a region in Sydney or Melbourne, driving automation and tooling to reduce recurring operational issues. You will work across many programming languages, collaborate with global service teams, and design full‑stack solutions that improve operational efficiency.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance, and must be able to successfully complete an Organisational Suitability Assessment. For more information about security clearances, see https://www.agsva.gov.au/.

Relocation support is offered for candidates moving from other states who are based in Sydney or Melbourne.

Mission

You will join at a defining moment for one of Australia’s most significant technology programmes, building and operating the dedicated cloud that gives the national security community and its allies the capability to act faster and innovate more.

The architectural decisions you make now will shape national security operations for the next decade.

Opportunity

In this role you will own the software services and platforms that keep the AWS network running within the region. You will develop and deploy automation that transforms how a large cloud network operates, working across multiple programming languages and frameworks, diagnosing issues at the code and systems levels, and building end‑to‑end solutions from design through operational management.

Benefits

- Learning & development – AWS training and certification support, access to internal learning platforms.
- Health, income protection and life cover – Amazon subsidises private health insurance premiums, and includes group salary continuance and life insurance at no cost.

- Military differential pay – up to 52 weeks of differential pay for employees on defence reserve leave.
- Employee Assistance Program – free, confidential 24/7 support for mental health, financial coaching, legal questions, and everyday life events.
- Family‑building benefit – access to Maven for fertility treatment, adoption support, surrogacy, and parenting coaching.
- Amazon Extras & employee discounts – cashback and discounts across retail, fitness, travel and lifestyle partners.

Key Job Responsibilities

You will own the software services and platforms that keep the AWS network running within the region, continuously reinventing them to be better, faster and more resilient. Your engineering work spans the full lifecycle: managing service deployments, troubleshooting operational issues, and maintaining service health.

You will focus on driving permanent solutions that eliminate recurring problems, developing automation that minimises human intervention, and collaborating with global service teams to enhance stability and functionality.

You will design and implement entirely new software components, products, and services that improve operational efficiency for network engineer customers. When technical issues arise, you will investigate them thoroughly, perform root‑cause analysis, implement long‑term fixes, and articulate technical requirements to service owners.

Additional responsibilities include owning in‑house services developed for this environment,

carrying full‑stack development responsibilities from design through operational management and continuous improvement, and building reliable deployment mechanisms and monitoring solutions that address unique environmental challenges.
