About the Role

We’re looking for a passionate and skilled Data Engineering Lead to join our growing data team. You will combine your technical leadership, client advisory and project oversight to design and deliver solutions across our data projects. We value technical excellence paired with strong consulting skills and a focus on building client partnerships.

The role involves both hands-on technical execution and strategic oversight, solution design, stakeholder management, mentoring and internal contributions. Strong communication is key, as you’ll translate complex technical concepts into actionable business insights, ensuring successful outcomes and informed decision-making for our clients.

In this role, you will:

1. Engage with key client stakeholders to gather and translate business requirements into technical specifications
2. Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines for batch and real-time processing.
3. Develop and optimise ETL/ELT processes using tools like Apache Airflow, dbt, or custom scripts.
4. Ensure data quality, integrity, and governance through automated testing and validation.
5. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development.
6. Support proposals, pitches, and the growth of our data engineering offering
7. Contribute actively to Dataly Actuarial’s professional development by sharing your data knowledge

Experience and Qualifications

A prerequisite for all applicants is the right to live and work in Australia or New Zealand.

1.



5+ years of data engineering experience
2. Proven capability to lead, manage, and develop teams of data professionals.
3. Solid ability to advise clients and recommend data solutions aligned with industry best practices.
4. Skilled in managing projects, aligning expectations with senior stakeholders, and identifying when escalation is required.
5. Advanced SQL and one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Scala, R).
6. Experience with data warehousing/datalake/lakehouse tools (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Google Cloud Platform)
7. Hands-on experience with ETL tools, orchestration frameworks, & data modelling (e.g., dbt, Airflow, medallion architecture).
8. Excellent verbal and written communication, in particular the ability to relate to senior management, colleagues, and client
9. Collaborative, detail-focused self-starter with strong analytical & problem-solving abilities.
10. Acts professionally, ethically and with integrity, leading by example.
11. Willingness to help, teach and support team members.
