The Infection Prevention team at Peter Mac works to protect patients, staff, and visitors by reducing the risk of healthcare‑associated infections. We provide expert guidance on infection control practices, monitor and respond to potential outbreaks, and support safe, high‑quality cancer care across the organisation.

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Infection Prevention or Central Sterilising Services Department professional to lead Peter Mac’s organisation‑wide Reusable Medical Device (RMD) Program.

In this newly established leadership role, you will provide strategic and operational oversight of reusable medical device governance, ensuring compliance with AS 5369:2023 across Endoscopy, Surgical Services, Cancer Imaging and Specialist Clinics. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will drive standardisation, quality improvement, risk management and education initiatives that support safe patient care and accreditation requirements.

Key responsibilities will see you:

- Lead implementation and ongoing compliance with AS 5369:2023.
- Develop and maintain Peter Mac’s RMD governance framework, policies and procedures.
- Coordinate RMD audits, compliance monitoring and reporting.
- Lead quality improvement and risk management initiatives relating to RMDs.
- Support investigation of RMD‑related incidents and infection risks.
- Provide expert advice, education and workforce capability development.
- Collaborate with clinical services, Infection Prevention teams and external CSSD providers to ensure safe and compliant reprocessing practices.

About you

You will be someone with excellent communication, collaboration and project management skills, who is able to build strong partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders.

- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Postgraduate qualification in Infection Prevention, Sterilisation Services or a related field
- Significant experience in infection prevention and reusable medical device reprocessing
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of AS 5369:2023
- Experience leading quality improvement, governance and compliance programs
- Strong understanding of NSQHS Standards, accreditation and clinical risk management
- Experience with audit, data analysis and reporting

Skills Essential Requirements

- AHPRA Registered Nurse with postgraduate qualifications in Infection Prevention, Sterilisation Services, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ postgraduate experience, including senior experience in infection prevention, RMD reprocessing and project leadership.
- Demonstrated expertise in reusable medical device reprocessing, with strong knowledge and application of AS 5369:2023 across diverse clinical settings (e.g. endoscopy, theatres, imaging, outpatient clinics).
- Proven experience leading organisation‑wide programs, including development and implementation of RMD governance frameworks, standardisation, and service improvement initiatives.
- Strong understanding of NSQHS Standards, clinical risk management, and accreditation requirements, with experience in audit, compliance, and quality improvement.
- Advanced knowledge of infection prevention and infectious diseases, including surveillance, outbreak management, and evidence‑based practice integration.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, influence, and build capability across multidisciplinary teams, driving system‑wide change and a culture of safety.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including policy development, reporting, and education.
- Experience in data analysis, auditing, and reporting, with proficiency in Microsoft 365 and clinical systems.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively at a senior level within a complex tertiary health service.

Desirable Requirements

- Sterilisation services qualification or certification (CSSD or equivalent).
- Experience implementing AS 5369:2023 or transitioning from AS/NZS 4187.
- Experience in tertiary/oncology healthcare settings.
- Knowledge of RMD traceability systems and digital integration.
- Experience with accreditation processes and external reviews.
- Training in quality improvement.
- Involvement in research, publications, or skilled bodies (e.g. ACIPC).
- Experience in education and workforce capability development.

Key Accountabilities RMD Governance & Compliance (AS 5369:2023)

- Lead implementation and ongoing compliance with AS 5369:2023 across all relevant services (endoscopy, theatres, imaging, clinics).
- Develop and maintain an organisation‑wide RMD governance framework, including policies, procedures, and standardised practices.
- Monitor compliance through audit programs, ensuring traceability, documentation, and adherence to reprocessing standards.

RMD Risk, Surveillance & Incident Management

- Lead or support incident and outbreak investigations related to RMDs, providing timely risk assessments and recommendations.
- Drive risk mitigation strategies to ensure safe reprocessing, storage, and use of RMDs.
- Assist with surveillance and investigations of device‑related infection risks and healthcare‑associated infections (HAI).

Data Analysis, Reporting & Assurance

- Establish and maintain RMD audit, compliance and performance reporting systems.
- Works in partnership with Surgical Services to support and align RMD traceability systems and digital compliance solutions with AS 5369.
- Provide regular reports to Infection Prevention Committee on RMD compliance, risks, and improvement activities.
- Use data to inform decision‑making, system improvements and accreditation readiness.

Quality Improvement & Standardisation

- Lead continuous quality improvement initiatives to optimise RMD processes and patient safety outcomes.
- Drive standardisation of practices and workflows across departments.
- Contribute to policy development and review aligned with AS 5369 and NSQHS Standards.
- Lead or contribute to research, evaluation, and innovation in RMD and infection prevention.
- Translate emerging evidence and standards into practice across the organisation.

Leadership, Education & Capability Building

- Provide expert leadership and advice on RMD reprocessing and infection prevention.
- Develop and deliver education and training programs to build workforce capability in RMD practices.

Program & Stakeholder Management

- Lead coordination of the RMD program across multidisciplinary stakeholders, including Infection Prevention, Surgical Services, clinical services, Radiation Therapy and support departments.

- Lead organisational change management required to embed AS 5369 compliance and standardised RMD practices
- Support planning for future service delivery models, infrastructure, and equipment related to RMDs.
