About the Company

Our client is a well-regarded, mid-sized Sydney law firm that has grown quickly over the past couple of years. There is a clear growth agenda ahead of them and the finance function is being built out to support it.

Senior finance leadership is newly in place and there is genuine appetite to invest in how the function operates. That matters, because the scope of this role is already understood and supported rather than something you would need to go and win.

About the Role

This is a permanent, full-time position owning the day-to-day finance function, with a team around you across transactional finance, trust accounting and assistant accountant roles. You would run the close, the controls and the reporting rhythm, reporting to the CFO with the wider leadership group close by.

It is a genuinely broad seat. Alongside the core financial control work there is real scope to shape process, reporting and how the function operates as the practice grows. The business has moved quickly and there is work to do in documenting how things run today, putting a proper monthly and weekly rhythm in place, and getting the team's time pointed at the right work.

Worth being straight about it: this suits someone who enjoys building rather than maintaining. If bringing structure to a fast-growing function is the work you like, it is a strong seat with a lot of ownership attached to it.

Responsibilities

- Full ownership of the month-end close, including timetable, journals, reconciliations and reporting to the CFO;
- Balance sheet integrity and control account ownership across a multi-entity structure;
- Leadership of the finance team, including workflow, capacity, development and structure;

- Trust account compliance and oversight in line with legal profession requirements;
- Cash, working capital and lockup reporting, including WIP, billing cycles, disbursements and debtor days;
- Statutory, tax and audit obligations across the group;
- Documenting how the function operates today, then building the monthly and weekly routine around it; and
- Supporting the rationalisation and improvement of finance systems as the practice grows.

Ideal Background

- CA Qualified, ideally with prior experience working in a Chartered environment;
- Legal industry experience is strongly preferred, with a working knowledge of practice management systems, WIP, billing and lockup, and trust account obligations;
- Other professional services backgrounds, particularly accounting or consulting, will be considered for someone with the right profile;
- Experience improving a finance function as a business grows, rather than maintaining one that already ran well;
- Comfortable in a business where cash and working capital are watched closely; and
- Able to lead an established team and bring them with you.

Benefits

- A permanent seat with genuine ownership and the scope to shape how the function operates;
- Direct access to senior leadership who are invested in getting finance right;
- Sydney CBD location, beautiful offices and flexible working;
- A growing practice with a transparent agenda ahead of it; and
- Clear career progression to take on a wider remit and drive a change agenda.

Please note this is a full-time permanent position and applicants must hold full Australian working rights.
