Supermarket cashiers are responsible for interacting with customers daily. They assist customers in finding products they are looking for, charge them for purchases, and provide general customer service. Supermarket cashiers should be knowledgeable about majority of the products in the store—they need to know where everything is located so that they can answer any questions from customers.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Supermarket cashiers have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
Process sales transactions
Calculate the cost of products or services.
Accept payments.
Calculate and return change when required by the payment method.
Maintain adequate change denominations in the cash drawer and request additional change.
Answer customer questions about products or services
Count cash drawers at end of each shift.
Report issues with equipment
Work as a team with other staff members.
Handle customer complaints.
Process returns and exchanges etc.
Maintain clean and tidy checkout area.
Assist in stocking and rotating merchandise.
Scan and bag items accurately and efficiently.
Stocking shelves with current merchandise or removing old items from shelves.
Skills Required
Work experience as a Retail Cashier or in a similar role in sales
Basic PC knowledge
Familiarity with electronic equipment, like cash register and POS
Valuable math skills
Solid communication and time management skills
Customer satisfaction-oriented
High school degree
Please note: You must be available to work weekends and on a rotating roster within the hours of 7 am - 8 pm.
