PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Internal Auditor supports the delivery of the organisation's independent, risk-based Internal Audit function within the Group Risk & Assurance function by providing objective assurance and practical insights that strengthen governance, risk management and internal controls across the business.
Reporting to the Head of Internal Audit, the role is responsible for supporting the planning and delivery of internal audits across operational, financial, compliance, project and strategic risk areas.
This includes evaluating the effectiveness of controls, identifying opportunities for improvement, and supporting management to strengthen organisational capability and performance.
As a pivotal member of a function being uplifted, the Internal Auditor will contribute to establishing a contemporary, data-informed and value-adding Internal Audit capability by helping develop audit methodologies, embedding quality practices, and promoting Internal Audit as a trusted business partner while maintaining appropriate independence and objectivity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Internal Audit Support and Delivery
Assist in the planning and delivery of end-to-end internal audit engagements in accordance with the approved Internal Audit Plan, including:
Supporting the scoping and planning of audits and reviews by developing an understanding of business objectives, processes, risks and key controls.
Conducting stakeholder interviews, process walkthroughs and documentation reviews to develop a practical understanding of the activities, processes and controls under review.
Performing audit fieldwork to critically assess the design adequacy and operating effectiveness of internal controls through testing, data analytics and evaluation of supporting evidence.
Identifying control weaknesses, process gaps or inefficiencies, emerging risks, and opportunities to improve efficiency, effectiveness and control maturity.
Exercising professional judgement in determining the significance of audit observations.
Preparing clear, accurate and well-documented audit working papers in accordance with the Internal Audit methodology, established templates and quality assurance requirements.
Assisting in the preparation of concise audit reports that clearly articulate findings, associated risks, root causes and practical, commercially focused recommendations.
Monitor, follow up and validate the implementation of agreed audit actions, including reviewing evidence of implementation, assessing the effectiveness of remediation, and escalating overdue or ineffective actions to the Head of Internal Audit.
Manage competing audit priorities and deliver work to agreed quality standards and timeframes.
Stakeholder Engagement
Work collaboratively with stakeholders at varying levels of the business to build trusted relationships and promote an understanding of Internal Audit, risk management and governance principles.
Promote Internal Audit as a trusted, value-adding business partner through professional engagement while maintaining independence and objectivity.
Build credibility through constructive challenge and practical recommendations that support improved business outcomes.
Participate in and facilitate discussions with all levels of the business to understand business processes and control environments, validate findings, and develop management actions.
Support the Head of Internal Audit in presenting observations, findings and recommendations following audit completion.
Internal Audit Function Development and Continuous Improvement
Partner with the Head of Internal Audit in designing, implementing and embedding fit-for-purpose audit methodologies, charters, policies and procedures, templates, standards and reporting tools.
Contribute ideas to continually enhance audit processes and efficiency, improve reporting quality, and strengthen the control environment.
Support the development of organisation-wide Assurance Maps and the annual risk-based audit plan through research, risk assessment and stakeholder engagement.
Participate in initiatives that establish a modern Internal Audit function, including continuous auditing, data-driven assurance and technology-enabled audit approaches to improve audit coverage and effectiveness over time.
Data and Insight Generation
Perform data analysis using technology-enabled audit techniques, where appropriate, to identify emerging trends, process inefficiencies and potential areas of concern or anomalies indicating risk.
Assist in translating audit observations into meaningful insights that strengthen governance, improve decision-making and enhance organisational capability.
Prepare dashboards, reporting and analytics to support Internal Audit reporting to management and the Audit & Risk Committee.
This includes using Risk, Compliance and Audit software to manage audit findings and actions.
Risk and Compliance Support
Support the broader Risk & Assurance team in continually improving the organisation's risk management frameworks by sharing insights from audit activities, informing organisational risk assessments, and identifying emerging issues relating to compliance obligations.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
2–5 years' experience in an internal audit, risk management or assurance-related role within a complex corporate or professional services organisation.
Experience across infrastructure, utilities, telecommunications or engineering is not required but will be highly regarded.
Experience supporting or conducting internal audits, including planning, fieldwork and reporting.
Exposure to risk management frameworks, compliance systems or control-testing methodologies.
Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with proficiency in Excel or audit analytics tools desirable.
Experience drafting findings and audit reports, including clearly articulating testing exceptions, identified process gaps and opportunities for improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business or a related discipline.
Qualified certification completed or in progress, such as CA, CPA or CIA.
Additional study or training in risk management, data analytics or governance will be well regarded.

Well-developed analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to interpret data, identify risks and develop meaningful insights.
High attention to detail, with the ability to apply sound professional judgement, rigour and accuracy across audit and assurance activities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and constructively to a range of stakeholders.
Ability to build trusted, collaborative relationships while maintaining independence, objectivity and ethical judgement.
Confidence engaging with stakeholders at all levels, asking insightful questions to understand business objectives, processes and how value is created, and providing constructive challenge where appropriate.
Commercial awareness, with an appreciation of operational realities and the ability to balance risk with practical business outcomes.
