Join Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership and help revitalise Guugu Yimidhirr language for future generations.
We are seeking passionate and motivated Language Cadets to support the revitalisation, maintenance and intergenerational transmission of Guugu Yimidhirr.
This is a unique opportunity to learn on the job, work closely with Elders and community members, and gain formal qualifications while contributing to meaningful cultural work.
About the Role
As a Language Cadet, you will:
Assist with recording and developing Guugu Yimidhirr texts and language resources
Support your speech community to promote language use in daily life
Help strengthen the transmission and revitalisation of Guugu Yimidhirr
Participate in on-the-job training and community-guided learning
Contribute to resource development, digital archiving and program delivery
Undertake training in First Nations Languages with Charles Darwin University, Northern Territory.
This training will involve 6 x 1-week study blocks in Darwin over 2 years.
You will be supported to attend,



with a mentor and costs covered.
What We're Looking For
Robust interest in language revitalisation and community-led approaches
Basic Numeracy and Literacy skills
Respect for Elders, custodians and cultural protocols
Willingness to undertake a Certificate III in First Nations Languages, while working
Basic digital literacy and willingness to learn
Good communication and relationship-building skills

Able to maintain confidentiality
