The Role:
The Grid Connection Manager will take ownership of the end-to-end grid connection process for utility-scale BESS projects, ensuring compliance with the National Electricity Rules (NER) and Australian grid performance standards. Working closely with project development, engineering, EPC, and commercial teams, you will manage technical interfaces with network service providers, AEMO, consultants and customers from the early development phase through to registration and commissioning. This is a highly visible role requiring both strong technical expertise and exceptional stakeholder management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the grid connection strategy for utility-scale BESS projects across Australia.
Manage the complete grid connection process from feasibility through to commissioning, registration and commercial operation.
Coordinate Generator Performance Standards (GPS) negotiations with network service providers and AEMO.
Review and manage power system studies, including load flow, fault level, dynamic, PSCAD and PSS®E modelling.
Work closely with internal engineering teams to ensure BESS designs satisfy grid compliance and technical performance requirements.
Manage technical consultants responsible for R0,
R1 and R2 modelling and grid connection studies.
Act as the primary technical interface with transmission and distribution network service providers, AEMO, EPC contractors and customers.
Support technology selection and engineering design reviews to optimise grid compliance and project performance.
Monitor changes to the National Electricity Rules, AEMO requirements and relevant Australian Standards.
Identify grid connection risks and develop mitigation strategies to support successful project delivery.
Provide technical input during project development, customer engagement and commercial negotiations.
About You
Demonstrated experience managing grid connections for utility-scale renewable energy or battery energy storage projects.
Strong understanding of the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM), National Electricity Rules (NER) and Generator Performance Standards (GPS).
Experience working with AEMO, Transmission Network Service Providers (TNSPs) and Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs).
Knowledge of power system analysis software such as PSCAD, PSS®E, PowerFactory or similar.
Understanding of inverter-based resources, power conversion systems and grid-forming/grid-following technologies is highly regarded.
Robust stakeholder management skills with the ability to coordinate developers, consultants, EPC contractors and network authorities.
Excellent communication and project management capability with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
